Tonight (Thursday) is the night that all roads lead to Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde as speedway action returns to the Isle of Wight for the first time since 2013.
Islanders – and fans from the mainland – are being invited to enjoy the thrills, spills, drama and excitement of speedway at Smallbrook when the tapes go up at 19:00 for the Vince Mapley Memorial trophy. The meeting tonight will see all 8 Wightlink Warriors and 4 other riders from around the country battle it out astride 500cc motorcycles with no brakes.
It’s fitting that tonight’s meet should carry Vince’s name and be dedicated to the memory of a remarkable man, who sadly passed away last year. Vince was a ‘weekend Warrior’, helping to bring the Smallbrook track back up to standard.
Speedway ceased here on the Island in the Autumn of 2013 but thanks to the efforts of Barry Bishop and Martin Widman, alongside many others including the backing of many local, national and international businesses, the distinctive roar of speedway bikes will once again echo across Ryde.
The public can get up close and personal in the pits from 17:45 until 18:15 ahead of a team parade at 18:45. Action starts at 19:00.
Tickets are priced at just £11 for adults; £8 for seniors (65+) & service personnel and £6 for students (with card). Children under 16 go FREE with a paying adult.
