Police on the Isle of Wight have arrested 2 men on suspicion of theft after intercepting a van reported to have been involved in suspicious activity.
Officers descended on the Wightlink ferry terminal at Fishbourne earlier this morning (Friday) when reports were received that 2 suspicious vehicles had arrived at the terminal to travel to the mainland.
Both vehicles have caught the attention of locals and Police on the Island this week following numerous social media reports of suspicious activity in a number of locations.
1 vehicle – a yellow Renault Traffic – was seized on the spot under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act but a second vehicle, a red Mercedez Sprinter, was let on its way. No arrests were made at the ferry terminal.
Now, thanks to further enquiries by Police, the red Sprinter has been stopped in a quiet car park in Binstead. It’s here that officers have arrested 2 men on suspicion of theft.
The detained individuals are being taken to Newport Police Station for questioning. The vehicle has been seized and is awaiting recovery.
Anyone with information relating to suspicious activity, or allegations of theft, should contact Police on 101, quoting reference 191 of 5th July.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 36-year-old man and a 30-year-old man, both from London, remain in Police custody at this time.
Those looking to retrieve stolen possessions are advised to call 101, quoting 44190232718.
Great news more non Island scum caught.
Keep up the good work.
Yes and had it not been for the fact that there is no fixed link, the police had ample time to get into position and the vehicles could not go anywhere once the police had contacted wightlink.
Well took there time catching them,
You do realise that the police are run off their feet? (Through no fault of their own)
Idiot! well done to the local police, hopefully sends a message IOW not an easy target and will not tolerate this
Still want a bridge or tunnel ? open the flood gates to these kind of free loaders ???
Thank goodness they can be caught at the ferry terminal when trying to escape an island!!
imagine if they could just drive off over a bridge or under a tunnel!!
thank goodness we are on an island!!
Well done to islanders and police officers for a good bit of team work
This would have been a very different story if there was a fixed link to the Island. That strip of water can be a blessing.
Scum
Drown the scum bags!! Stealing a mans tools!
