An unlicensed and uninsured driver who was suspected of being under the influence of drink or drugs was stopped as he disembarked the Red Funnel ferry in East Cowes early yesterday morning (Tuesday).
Officers were alerted to the situation at 05:20 when they received a call reporting that a passenger on board the Red Funnel ferry from Southampton was thought to be under the influence of drink and drugs.
Police attended the terminal at East Cowes and detained a man at the scene, conducting a number of roadside tests and checks.
Although attending officers seized a small amount of cannabis, the driver was not found to be impaired.
However, it soon became clear that the male did not have a licence or insurance to drive the vehicle.
The driver has now been reported for summons for the offences of driving without a licence and driving without third party insurance. He will appear in court at a later date.
His car, a silver Vauxhall Zafira, was seized.

Another idiot that has no right to be on our roads will be along soon….
Oooh the shame of it. Being caught driving a Vauxhall Zafira
Probably his to be fair and not on “The Knock”
Without insurance or licence, how would you feel if he smashed into your property or car? Or killed an innocent member of the public?….however, what make of car would be suitable in your mind?…don’t tell me, it’s an Audi or BMW…
Well done to the people that spotted him.
Mug, banned and shamed. The stupidity of these idiot’s, no thought of other people or their families, do other countries have the same amount of degenerate losers we have in the UK?
Well done to RF for spotting the idiot individual who was stopped causing any damage with the car on the Island. Perhaps the Police should do a few more unannounced visits to the ferry and see what other vermin they can find before they disembark – it does mean both ways.
If the vehicle is saleasble, it should be sold and the funds rsised go into police coffers rather than the car being crushed.
about time they fitted ANPR cameras to the ferries, better at the entrance.. then if anything flags up when waiting for ferry, they can be detained there… also they could ask to see a drivers licence prior to boarding.
Are the ferry companies allowed to carry uninsured private vehicles..??
Hi,
Recently moved from London and quite surprised… dare I say shocked!! at such small place mentality.Gee… is this really worth the time or space…. Car driven off ferry!! Man under influence or car unfit… etc…etc..Come on,has to be driven by at least a Dr Crippen or some mad serial killer to deserve such headlines.!!!
This kind of occurance is news on the iow and these comments are pretty standard.
I expect you moved from London to escape the scum that live there too.. next move try the outer Hebrides … the ferry goes both ways. You obviously think folk that live on the island are of low mentality and you matey are adding to the numbers like the rest of the overners who move here.
It’s the overners that bring stability and common sense to the island
How?…………
Wow, listen to you. You lack self awareness – the influx of thousands of overners is not welcome, and is damaging what was good about the Islanders’ home. Perhaps you may wish to remove your “stability and common sense”, back to where it was formerly clearly appreciated.
You expect the local news to be like London? You think we’re missing out on something? This sort of comment illustrates the fact that overners simply don’t get what is special about our home, and the fact that we like it the way it is.
I have observed so many wrongun’s ordering alcohol on board and then driving off. Having an ANPR to greet you on arrival would be a quick win for the fuzz and reduce mobility of the proliteriat.
You idiot. He is born and Bred iow.So thick they think they can get away with anything.
I too have moved here from the Smoke, and have noticed the vast difference in the headlines in the local papers. However lower crime rates is one of the reasons for moving here. If we start seeing headlines over here the likes of those we see in London then all is lost.
So yeah…whilst it may seem a trivial crime (certainly to make a story or headline) the ramifications of this chap driving off in a clearly inebriated condition could be devastating for other road users or pedestrians.
It also appears to me that having ANPR at all ferry ports coming to and going from the Island makes complete sense.
