Supermarket shoppers at Morrisons in Newport have been evacuated this evening (Tuesday) amid fears of a gas leak.
The incident occurred at around 16:00 and has seen shoppers suddenly evacuate the national chain supermarket after the fire alarm went off.
It is believed that a leak has occurred in one of the refrigerator units.
1 appliance from the nearby Newport Fire Station is in attendance.
Firefighters have entered the premises and are working to isolate the leak and make the shop safe again.
It is unclear as to how long the shop will be closed.

Didn’t the exact same thing happen in this same supermarket a year or so ago? Have they actually heard of this thing called maintenance? The top brass should be working for the ferry companies!
Gas-powered refrigeration? Why haven’t they got solar panels on the roof to run electric ‘fridges?
It’s more likely to be refrigerant gas like Freon, which is highly toxic.
All fridges have gas in them numnuts
Is this a joke? I take it you don’t know how refrigerators work? Even your one at home has gas in it.
They mean the refrigerant gas leaked not that they are powered by gas.
It is now back open as just walked past
Please come back we need you
If you start reducing your prices I may return, until then jog on. You will soon be as expensive as Waitrose!
Well said Kev
Seconded. Same brands at Lidl are 30% cheaper. Orange club biscuits at Morrisons £1.65. At Lidl they are £1.09.
Man (or woman) cannot live on Orange club biscuits alone (but he can give it a good try).
Iv brought numerous freezer items that hav been icy through out… Example i brought ice cream on 3 different occasions an all of them was like they had been defrosted then refrosted i phoned an put in a complaint 3times… Obviously something seriously wrong with the fridges an freezers an they do nothing im not surprised this has happened
Stay away please u are banned
Horrible shop horrible staff
Most refigerators are cooled by the compression of a refrigerant gas by an electric pump. A compressor fault can release gas into the building.
Yea that’s correct u win a prize
The baked beans are to cheap…. Sorry I do what I can,, but sometimes you just gotta let ripppp!!!
Totally agree with you Helen well said
Ha ha. The electricity runs a gas filled refrigeration unit. It’s how these things work.
Hey you get off my cloud
