Wight Tri recently held the first of their Summer ‘Splash and Dash Series’ events when members took part in the St Helen’s Aquathlon. Competitors had the choice of a 200m or 400m swim followed by either a 2.9km or 5km run which started from the Duver, up to St Helens Green. down to The Causewayover and then over the sand dunes to finish back at The Duver. 1st nominated winner was new member Steven Snarey, who completed the long course in 45.03, just 3 seconds outside his time. 2nd was Craig Wilson, just 8 seconds out and 3rd Gary Kurth – 11 seconds over. Gary, who had just returned to triathlons after a few years hiatus, certainly hadn’t lost his swimming prowess as he led all the competitors out of the sea with a swift 6.05 for the 400m swim, and was closely followed by Rob Johnson, just 9 secs later. However, Rob soon showed a clean pair of heals to all competitors with the fastest run split of 20.38 to finish fastest overall on the long course in 27.43. Dan Morgan finished 2nd in 33.38, having passed Gary, in the last few kms, who finished 3rd in 33.49. The fastest female was Lucy Doorly in 35.27. Caley Teasdale was fastest in the short course, completing the 200m swim and 2.9km run in 23.17. Wight Tri would like to thank the race organiser, sea kayak support, timekeepers and marshalls for all their help in putting on another well-organised event. The next event in the Summer Series is the Yaverland Aquabike, held from Yaverland Sailing and Boat Club this Friday (19th July) – meet at 18:00 for a 18:30 start. Open to all for £5 entry fee.
