The village of St Helens will be running 4 days of free events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, starting from Thursday (2nd June).
On Thursday evening, the lighting of an electric beacon will follow an open-air movie night on the Village Green, showing the film Mama Mia. Residents are encouraged to attend in fancy dress.
On Friday, the Goose Island Games will be held, including a local tug-of-war challenge.
On Saturday, following events in and around the Harbour, there will be a Barn Dance, followed by local band the Resisters, who will play through until 23:00.
On Sunday, the annual Village Fayre will return after the pandemic years, followed by a Jubilee Picnic on the Village Green. There will be an exhibition by the St Helens Historical Society showing village celebrations throughout the years, and events will conclude with a short service and blessing led by the Reverend Ali Morley.”
Uniquely, the St Helens beacon will have an electric flame.
Jonathan Bacon, Chair of St Helens Parish Council, explains:
“We very much wanted to join in the chain of beacons around the country; however, we found that the village beacon, which was last used in 2002, had deteriorated to such an extent it had to be scrapped.
We also listened to local residents, particularly those with a thatched roof, who expressed concern about having a beacon lit on the Village Green. From there, it was a short step to coming up with the idea of creating an electric Beacon using flame effect bulbs.
“The beacon has been designed by village residents, Tony Elliott and Steve Wilson, made from recycled items, and will be an amazing start to our village celebrations.”
Jacky Matthews, St Helens Parish Clerk, has said:
“I have not been in the village long, but I am amazed at how residents of St Helens continually come together with ingenuity and enthusiasm to create something incredible to support and celebrate the local community. A lot of hard work has been put in and thanks go to the many who have helped with ideas, work behind the scenes, and the volunteers who will be putting together and overseeing the events of the Jubilee weekend.
“It promises to be a very special time in the village and across the country.”
Heavy rain and thunderstorms Sunday morning.
No need to like or dislike my comment. It is what it is and the current forecast is rain and thunderstorms. Get over it.
