Shide Trees are NOT opening in Newport this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but don’t fear, you can still purchase your trees exclusively at Thompson’s Garden Centre in Newchurch.
Shide Trees, which is well known for having its Island-grown trees along Blackwater Road, is said to be one of the biggest Christmas tree suppliers on the Island.
Every November & December, Shide Trees opens it’s doors from a pop-up site on Shide Road (near National Tyres), selling freshly cut trees to the eager public.
However, for 2020 the trees will only be sold at Thompson’s in nearby Newchurch.
Shide Trees has been apart of the Thompson Nursery Group for the past 2 decades.
A spokesperson for Thompson’s Garden Centre has said:
“This year as we all know has been different to any before.
“With the current retail restrictions in place, we have taken the difficult decision not to open the Shide Retail site as we would normally do.
“We feel that at the garden centre we are better prepared to offer our customers a safer, more controlled shopping environment for purchasing their Christmas Trees.
“The trees sold at Thompson’s Garden Centre have always been cut from the same fields that the trees at Shide have been cut from, so we will continue to offer the same freshly cut, great value, Island grown trees for customers of Shide and Thompson’s.”
You will still be able to view the trees before they are netted, just like you would at Shide.
The news comes just as Newport Fire Station have been seen erecting their tree on top of their drill tower this afternoon (Tuesday) – a traditional sign that Christmas is coming!

Far more expensive then, and outside in the clear air, as they were they would SURELY be far, far safer. Sounds bull to me. More to this than meets the eye, thinks Mrs Hook.
