A Shanklin man caught driving whilst on his phone was found to be under the influence of drugs at the time, a court has heard.
Callum Steele, 30, of Victoria Avenue in Shanklin, admitted drug driving (THC) and using a mobile phone whilst driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (3rd January).
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 13th June 2024, Steele – who was driving a Renault Master van – was seen thumbing his phone screen whilst driving along Fairlee Road, Newport.
Having been stopped by officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, a drugs test was conducted which returned a positive reading for cannabis. Steele was subsequently arrested and taken to Newport Police Station.
Defending Steele, Oscar Vincent said that it was simply a brief glance at the phone and that Steele has been clean of all drugs in the months since his stop. The court heard how Steele was currently unemployed after losing his job following a previous drug driving misdemeanour committed earlier in 2024.
Steele has well over 20 previous convictions to his name and last appeared on Island Echo back in April 2024.
Magistrates adjourned the case until 4th April to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled.
Bang up all Motorists who use mobile phones
at the wheel, not to mention under the influence
of drugs.
How many previous convictions does one have to
have before being banged up!.
The UK is a soft touch when it comes to
Law and Order
No disrespect to the Island Echo, but if what “Scumbag” says is true, WHY is he/she writing all of this in a letters page of a newspaper. You should make a valid complaint to the Chief Constable. Put it in writing and have it sent by recorded delivery.
Im not stupid my friend. I have on numerous occasions and still nothing comes of it. Witch surely even you must find strange,
Have you ever considered malcoman that maybe just maybe Sargent steel is the chief constable and my letters just keep ending up on his desk.
