29-year-old Callum Steele has avoided going to prison, despite being in breach of a suspended sentence, after crashing his car on the dual carriageway and fleeing the scene. It was on 3rd December last year that Steele crashed his Audi S3 – registration C15 FKU – on Medina Way in Newport, smashing into the nearside and offside armco barriers. Debris was left strewn across the carriageway including the vehicle’s radiator and exhaust. Instead of calling the emergency services and reporting the crash, Steele abandoned his car and left the scene. He was picked up by a passing motorist, whom he knew, and was given a lift back to his address on Victoria Avenue, Shanklin. The next day, some 14 hours later, Steele notified Police of the incident stating that he lost control of the back end of his vehicle as he travelled in the inside lane. The 29-year-old was later charged with failing to stop after a road traffic collision and appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court in January, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. He had previously been convicted for 22 other offences. Magistrates decided that by committing the offence Steele was in breach of a 2-year suspended sentence order imposed by the Isle of Wight Crown Court in June 2022 for 2x drug supply offences and possession of a 12,000 volt stun gun. The case was sent up to the Isle of Wight Crown Court where Steele appeared for sentencing last Friday. However, Judge Michael Bowes KC decided not to activate Steele’s suspended sentence, nor ban him from driving. Instead, the newly qualified driver was handed 5 penalty points on his licence – a single point under the threshold for losing your licence within the 2 years first of driving. Steele was also fined £350.

Suspended sentence, yet not even a driving ban lmao
Yet I get caught speeding 36 in a 30 never been in trouble with the police in my life and I get 3 points. He has 22 other offences drug charges 12,000 volt stun gun left the scene of a crash probably because high on drugs and gets 5 point and a £350 fine and avoids jail despite being in breach of a suspended sentence. WOW
What is up with these judges why dish out sentences it they not upheld, he had a suspended sentence that means nothing and he keeps license what a joke
Must of known the judge ? funny anyone else would get a ban!. Clearly was under influence and needed to avoid police at time. Good luck with getting any insurance – expect he won’t tell them the truth through…….so unfair with 22 previous offences and on license. Some poor new driver would be banned for speeding a little not recognising. This guy has a high speed crash, leaves the scene and ties up much police and Court time and probably legal aid etc.
Sounds like a police informant to me. dirty little rat anyway. Well no coke dealer and they don’t activate his suspended sentence. Police spy
Yes I’m sure. He will get he’s pay back one day.
What a mockery, I can only imagine he has friends in the right places.
Shocking.
I thought that if you breach the conditions of a suspended sentence, you automatically forfeit the ‘get out card’, and a prison sentence would be invoked. So how did this guy only receive a slap on the wrists?
I think the court order includes a Chinese burn.
Obviously got something on the judge
Depends who you know I guess or what you have been asked to do (police spy) well known dealer
Unbelievable, so let’s look at the facts, he crashed his car left the scene and reported it the following day clearly made a phone call to get picked up and still hes on the road!!!! I think if I see him drive thinking hes got a 700bhp car doing the the nurburgring police might just have to do a roadside drug test on him, remember callum family and friends want to get home safe.
Son of a mason I expect.
I agree, same as the jag on its roof & driver was stoned & injured his passengers didn’t get band
Previous convictions are normally of relevance to the current offence when they are of a similar type. Previous convictions of a type different from the current offence may be of relevance where they are an indication of persistent offending or escalation and/or a failure to comply with previous court orders. Lenience in this case would be because it appears his recent attempts to turn his life around (passing his test and getting a job) held sway. Let’s hope he takes up the good offer.
You always seem to be on the wrong side of things. Turned his life around, don’t make me laugh.
Wrong side of common opinion, right side of facts. I know which one I prefer.
What an absolute load of balderdash!
Which bit? Prove me wrong then.
Well either he has a friend in high places or is a police informer, what the hell is going on with judges these days?? What sort of message is that sending out to idiots like this.
why not give him a free holiday as well.
Yeah. A definite candidate for the Rwandan Holiday… Vorsprung durch Technik again.
That told him obviously won’t be doing it again….
these judges why are they so soft ?
Beggars belief
Absolutely ridiculous. What sort of message does that send to criminals. A suspended sentence!! Why on earth not acted on. 22 previous offences!! No law and order whatsoever here and he will just carry on as he already has as no fear of any punishment. He’ll probably steal the money for the fine!!
What a joke.
Likely left the scene due to being drunk to avoid being arrested and charged, then reported it when sobered up.
If this doesn’t warrant a custodial for the suspended sentence, and not even a disqualification, then we all might aswell give up with courts.
What is the point, a dangerous and stupid yob allowed to drive and the clown of a judge didn’t activate his suspended sentence, our judiciary are a joke
Thanks for the tip Callum, next time I crash whilst pissed and stoned I’ll do a runner then come back the next day.
He is obviously working for the police now
He has been working with them for years now. would love to break his skinny little jaw. vermin rat
Anyone would think his Dad is a prominent member of the Lodge…..
Well of couse he did..well done to all involed..
Disgusting. Judge Michael Bowes should be strung up by his balls in public. He is a disgrace to the legal profession. Just goes to show that the only way to get justice against habitual criminals on this island is for it to be mob justice, as we cannot rely on the courts to protect us at all.
I’ll say it again…the ONLY crime he committed and could be charged with is leaving the scene of an accident. Speculation as to the cause without firm evidence is not allowed in law for obvious reasons. His previous crimes are not relevant as not of a similar type. There are sentencing guidelines for the offence and legally that is all a judge, any judge is allowed to use. In deliberating it will have been noted that in spite of his past crimes he now has a job (level of fine) and recent test pass, therefore outright ban could impact his ability to work. They went up to the max with a warning for the future. In spite of comments, that’s good sentencing which takes the wider view of impact to society of future taxation and a benefits saving
It is because of people like you that these people are allowed to get away with murder. How can you possibly justify your absurd comments? Until we start handing out stiff sentences to these offenders they will just laugh at the powerlessness of the legal system.
Ability to work, he sells coke and is working for the old bill most people don’t have 1 job let alone 2. He will be delivering his coke in a police car next. Anyone need 3 for 100 call 999 and ask for cal steel
Used to go to college at the same time as him. Was known to brag about his dangerous driving then (even though he didn’t have a license). So he’s been driving unlicensed for over 10 years….
There you go Karen stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!
He’s a grass, druggy informant dangerous driving little tosser and you think he’s a poor little lad trying to turn his life around?!
You people are pathetic, try living in the real world where these scum reside, they run rings round you idiots!! He’s got you all by the short and curlys and knows it!
We will read about something else soon as he’ll do something incredibly stupid but sadly people’s lives are at risk here. Ridiculous it’s a farce.
The law is an ass !! In
His mates and associates must be crapping themselves!! How many people must he of grassed up to get away with all that?! Callum Steele you better change your name to Super Grass you wrong’on!!
Who is this judge, he’s a joke and should be removed I’d thrown the keys away with this guy
Informant just wait a week or so then the doors will be going through
Badge number 0420 Sargent steel at your service. Dirty rat
Surely the question should be why did that oxygen thief get a suspected sentence for his last offence. That must warrant a prison sentence. That little dweeb is laughing at everyone and is clearly untouchable
Absolutely criminally lenient to a danger to the innocent public. Fled the scene as probably high. Such irresponsible behaviour should have seen very long ban, if not prison and car crushed. Remind me, what are suspended sentences for.
if another judge awarded a suspended sentence what right has another judge to override it
He’s number plate says it all.
And he has “FKU” ✌️
