Volunteers at Shanklin Community Library have recently been presented with certificates by the Mayor of Shanklin and the Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet Member for Heritage, Cllr John Hobart, as part of June’s National Volunteers’ Week.
Shanklin Town Council took over responsibility for the library in 2012 and under the co-ordination of Maria Darbon, now has a team of 33 volunteers supporting 7 sessions a week.
The volunteers have helped to establish a sewing group, colouring/art group, monthly beat surgeries with the Police, a reading group and alongside the Friends of Shanklin Community Library have helped organise fundraising events such as book bingo and quizzes.
Mayor Jon Gilbey said:
“Shanklin is very fortunate to have a team of dedicated and committed volunteers to maintain this much needed pubic service. The development of activities highlight the need for this amenity and the future potential of the service”.
As well as presenting the volunteers with their well-warn certificates of appreciation, Mayor Gilbey and Cllr Hobart also unveiled new displays and shelving units purchased following fundraising initiatives. A new reading area and seats for the Children’s section were also unveiled.
Jon concluded:
“Thanks to Maria and John for highlighting the work of the library and volunteers in Volunteers week. I know the Community Library are looking ahead for the Summer Reading Challenge, as well as possible development of a story time project in the future – thanks again to the volunteers for making all of this possible”.
