A Newport food business has been served with 2 Food Hygiene Improvement Notices and awarded a 1-star food hygiene rating – meaning ‘major improvement necessary’ – after inspectors uncovered a catalogue of food safety and hygiene failings during an inspection.
Afrowight Ltd, trading on High Street in Newport, was inspected by Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team on 21st May 2026.
Inspectors found a range of hygiene failings, including dirty food preparation equipment with old meat residue, unclean scales and packaging equipment, raw meat juices contaminating storage areas, damaged walls and flooring, defective food preparation surfaces and broken freezer trays.
Officers also found there was no hot running water at the hand wash basin, with fairy washing-up liquid being used instead of hand soap and toilet roll being used to dry hands because no hygienic drying facilities were available. An electric fly killer was positioned directly above an area where raw meat was being prepared, creating a potential contamination risk.
The report further states that disinfectant being used on food contact surfaces did not meet the required British Standards, while repackaged raw meat lacked mandatory country of origin information. During questioning, the food business operator was also unable to correctly state the legal chilled food storage temperature, leading inspectors to conclude there was a lack of basic food hygiene knowledge.
The business has been ordered to complete a series of improvements, with some requiring immediate action and others to be completed over the coming weeks and months.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 10
Compliance with structural requirements – 15
Confidence in management/control procedures – 20
Total score: 45 (1 rating)
