Students from Christ the King College put on a performance to remember at the Portsmouth Guildhall last night (Monday) to secure second place in Day 1 of Rock Challenge 2018.
The Carisbrooke-based college went up against 8 other schools from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Dorset and London but came out with a podium place for their performance ‘From the Shackles of Oppression’.
The story being performed was that of a slave ship arriving in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festival. At the auctioning of the slaves, a mother and daughter are sold to different masters, the rebellious mother is killed. Spirits draw tribal ancestors to the heartbroken child spurring her on towards revenge for her people’s enslavement.
In addition to placing overall, no less than 7 other awards were scooped for excellence in concept, set design and function, costuming character, entertainment, lighting, stage crew and student leadership.
Ryde Academy, a Premier Showcasing Team, were awarded for excellence in choreography, concept, drama, soundtrack, costuming character, visual enhancement, entertainment, lighting and video performance. They were also handed the Spirit of Rock Challenge award.
Ryde School with Upper Chine received awards for excellence in soundtrack, lighting and video performance.
