A 2-week window for applications for ‘privilege seats’ on school buses for the 2023/24 academic year has been opened by the Isle of Wight Council.
Parents and guardians of children not eligible for free school transport can apply for a privilege seat until 12:00 on Friday 7th July.
For details on how to apply, visit: www.iow.gov.uk/privilegeseats
Applications must be during the online application window and seats will be allocated after the closing date. The process will select successful applicants randomly.
A privilege seat costs £390 — the equivalent of around £2 a day over the academic year — which can be paid in termly or half termly instalments.

Yet another council money grabbing exercise.
no – the freeloaders should be paying as well – or walk to school
Yes and no ,why only a two week window?. So come September and 20 seats left on a bus they not going to allow them to be filled at loss of £40 day, that’s £200 week or £2500 a term loss. Second why at random, some parents don’t drive and it maybe like me no Southern Vectis bus available. Children are forced to schools out of area due to bullying (education still does nothing) or not appropriate provision and should have priority.
Try getting to school on a bus when you have ASD and you will find out why this is very important.
Surely that yellow bus collects the odd children for free still doesn’t it?
No, and no yellow bus, not been any for ten plus years .
Who’s entitled to a free bus seat then ? The scrounging non working parents. What about the parents that work, doesn’t mean they’re well off. The government has plenty of money for the dinghies arriving for 5 star accommodation. Why not our children?
Kids for whom the school is 3 miles from their home and is also the nearest to their home are entitled to free bus transport.
Once the free places have been allocated the council sell of the remainder of the seats as these “privilege” seats.
So nothing to do with benefits, scroungers, etc.
It has everything to do with sponging – pay for your own kids transport, no matter how far away you are.
Some people, free school bus has nothing to do with being on benefits or income,if school is over 3miles is criteria. Privalidge seats also have to be paid for regardless of income.
With regards to Migrants – they don’t ask, it’s our stupid Government who are taken advantage of by dodgy companies charging them. How can it cost £150 per/day person in a rat ridden scummy hotel and no meals ?. Also £100,000 cost on what for one person. Government needs investigating for fraudulent behaviour.
I’ve got room, I’ll take half-dozen at £150 each per night, I’ll feed them as well and they could work on farm as well and I’ll pay them (at moment they get only£15per wk from state),win win.
What are “Privilege Seats”? Pupils who need to be provided with transport to get to school should have it provided by the local authority at no cost. Those who do not need it should not have it provided. It should be a matter of need. Access to education is a right, not a privilege – this is not the Dark Ages. For heaven’s sake, have we sunk so low?
All children should be given free access to public transport. The state should fund this to facilitate a green transition to the use of electric public transport rather than cars when they become adults. We need serious investment in saving the planet.
£2 a day for the priviledge of occupying a vacant seat on a bus which would otherwise travel with that seat empty. £0.50 a day would be about right.
Parents get thousands in tax credits so USE IT on your children not on long nails and lashes, holidays and a beemer
