Sandown Town Mayor Gary Young and fellow town councillors have welcomed the provision of beach ambassadors in Sandown and across The Bay.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a team of ‘Island Ambassadors’ will be patrolling beaches on the Isle of Wight this month to ensure that holidaymakers are adhering to social distancing guidelines, as well as monitoring littering, graffiti, dog fouling and anti-social behaviour.
As well as welcoming the introduction of ambassadors, the Town Council has welcomed the response received regarding inconsiderate jet skiers in The Bay.
Mayor Young said:
“The Town Council has been very aware of public concerns about beach safety, with COVID-19 arrangements making it difficult to respond as we would like, and the introduction of Beach Ambassadors for this summer, is in line with the plans we set out in February’s Budget meeting”.
Sandown Town Council had allocated funding for town improvements including provision of lifeguards, but the RNLI nationally had to restrict provision to the most dangerous beaches, with Sandown being assessed as one of the safest in the country.
Deputy Mayor Paul Brading added:
“The Town Council has worked to open our public toilets, Steven Jenkins playpark and other amenities, within the COVID-19 guidelines, at the same time as dealing with incidents of anti-social behaviour – and we are grateful for the support of local residents for the progress we have been able to make”.
Cllr Young concluded:
“We are also planning events for VJ Day @ 75 on August 15th, within the guidelines, reflecting the balance between delivering services during the pandemic, and working with partners, with limited resources, to mark local and national occasions appropriately”.

If that is supposed to be setting an example, those concerned obviously have no idea what 2 metres looks like
This is an absolute joke. Where were they when the large Indian family had 8 BBQ on the beach and let their kids poo in the sand. If you don’t believe me check the Sandown Hub.
