Firefighters from Ventnor, Shanklin and Ryde are tackling a rubbish fire at a block of flats in central Ventnor tonight (Saturday).
3 appliances are currently on scene at Albert Street, where firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered a block of flats.
Island Echo is told that a pile of rubbish has caught alight in the stairwell of Albert House.
Residents have been evacuated, including a number of animals and young children. All persons are safe and well.
A pair of breathing apparatus wearers armed with a hose reel have been committed inside the building.
The building’s alarm still sounding.
Albert Street is currently closed to all traffic with some Southern Vectis buses unable to proceed.
Police have closed the road at the junction with Victoria Street.
