Rescue teams are working to free a person stuck in the mud on the banks of Wootton Creek this afternoon (Saturday).
Hanpshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are working together to assist the casualty, who has become trapped on the western side of the creek opposite Kite Hill Campsite.
The individual is located some distance from the main access point at Lakeside Park Hotel – where the emergency services have rendezvoused – off the Public Bridleway N1.
An ambulance crew and operational commander have managed to gain access up the narrow bridleway to get closer to the casualty’s remote location with the rest of the journey completed on foot over a low level bridge.
The alarm was raised sometime before 16:30.
It’s the third mud rescue on the Island this month – a teenage girl found herself above her knees in mud on the River Medina at Medham and a cow became stuck in Freshwater.
UPDATE @ 17:44 – The man has been successfully freed from the mud and is now being carried on a basket stretcher to the awaiting ambulance – located around 250m away over an uneven path, a bridge and a fallen tree.
He is to be taken to St Mary’s Hospital for a check up.
It’s understood the partially sighted individual – who walks with the assistance of a cane – was enjoying an accompanied walk when the unfortunate situation developed.
The incident has involved a fire appliance and a water rescue unit from Newport, a Land Rover 4×4 from Ryde, Coastguards from both Ventnor and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Teams plus an ambulance and operational commander.
Emergency services are now standing down.

Enjoying an accompanied walk?? Did they take him near the edge for a laugh??? Rediculous situation, pleased he is OK.
Should have used his stick to better effect….
How the heck did that happen? The mind boggles.
We were a group of friends enjoying a walk. The person concerned rescued my dog and was an absolute hero after I failed miserably to get my dog back from the other side of the river. There will be an official update on this matter. If you feel the need to vent your anger then please direct it at me. Thank you.
Sounds like he got himself into a sticky situation but glad he is safe now. Also, well done to all the emergency services, great team effort.
I bet he didn’t see that coming…..
Not actually sure why someone would take a partially sighted person there for a walk???
Poor man. Glad he came to no harm – and the dog too
