A man in his 30s has been seriously injured following a motorcycle crash outside Osborne House in East Cowes – with the incident referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the Police’s ‘prior contact’.
It was during the early hours of yesterday morning (Monday) that officers responding to an unrelated incident witnessed a motorcyclist being ridden at dangerous speeds along Whippingham Road.
It’s understood Police followed the motorcyclist as he headed into East Cowes at speed.
Moments later, the rider lost control on a left-hand bend on York Avenue outside the main entrance to Osborne House, careering into road furniture and a set of historic Grade II listed Victorian gates. The gates, first listed on Historic England back in 1972, have been damaged.
The rider, a man in his 30s from East Cowes, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident. He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
It has been confirmed that the crash is being treated as a single vehicle collision. However, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has told Island Echo that a mandatory referral has been made to the Police watchdog, the IOPC.
The referral has been made due to ‘prior police contact’, according to the IOPC.
A spokesperson for the IOPC has said:
“We can confirm that we have received a mandatory referral from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, relating to a motorcycle collision in East Cowes, Isle of Wight on Monday 23 June.
“We are assessing the referral and will decide whether further action may be required from us.”
Speeding on that corner stupid , speeding in general not at all recommended.
I have been saying for years speeding is rife on the
Island and no one can tell me different!
Take a stroll along Beachfield Road in Sandown for
proof.
It’s about time speed Camera’s were installed,
safer for everyone.
while I do hope the rider is alright. I do hope is is made to pay for any repairs the gate needs
His insurance company will have to pay…. assuming he was in fact insured…Maybe not, if he was trying to evade the police that were in the area….
The bike wasn’t insured possibly sorn was probably dropping off as well …
Great that the police did something as bikes IN the UK seem to have a free for all and mentallity of the “think bike” campaign making it sound like it’s always the cars fault. So the police have to do an inquiry as to why they chased the bike? Hopefully the biker pays the price but j suspect in few months will be slapped with a small fine and a slap on the wrist “bad boy” and back to same problem.
