A Police car has sustained significant damage in a side-on impact involving a taxi in Newport this evening (Thursday).
The collision between the marked Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Ford Focus Active and a VW Passat taxi happened at the junction of St James’ Street and Lugley Street shortly before 18:30.
The brand new Police car’s airbags were deployed as a result of the impact but thankfully the uniformed officers, nor the driver of the taxi, have been injured.
The road was blocked for a while but has since reopened.
Tonight’s incident is the latest in a series of collisions today including crashes at Calbourne, Ryde, Chale, Thorness and on Yarmouth Road near Shalfleet.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say they are investigating yesterday’s incident to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.
It’s said that the 2 Police officers in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and the taxi driver from the other vehicle involved, were taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure. However, they were later released.
It has been confirmed that the Police car was not responding on blue lights and sirens at the time.

No comment, it,goes from bad to worse.
Looks like the police car pulled out in front of the taxi. Police driving without due care and attention
only thing that should be pulling out is ur father…
Bad ju ju on the island today.
Bad drivers?
Driving on the island is like driving in Cairo lol
Did they get their driving licence in a Christmas cracker ???
These silly hooligans
3 parties at fault
1) taxi clearly not understanding hazards and speeding, might be 30mph road but does say slow and this driver would of used same junction in direction of police car so aware of poor visibility, how could they not see police car.
2) police car should of entered into main road with care and slow to get good view of road to right and give chance for vehicle to pass in front.
3) main issue is IOW planning agreeing to new building being built on original footprint of over 100yr , when cars were few and slow. We all thought old building was knocked down to improve visibility and new building should of been set back at least another meter Both parties should blame IOW for allowing junction to be unsafe. A cycle would be dead!
And I’m guessing you weren’t even there!
Btw, cycles aren’t living things in the first place, so they can’t die.
No more space left, but assumed most would understand cycle = Cyclist.
What a stupid post!!
Low cost housing is badly required on the IoW.The new build is on a brown field site that was run down and vacant. How do you know the taxi was speeding, were you there. How do you know the police car came out of Lugley Street? The taxi could have just pulled around the corner.
How can you blame both parties if the police car pulled out in front of the taxi? So if you drive down the road and I pull out in front of you and you hit me it’s both parties fault?
The police car would of been fully out in road to be hit in side , wasn’t hit front or rear so Taxi driver if not going more than 20 would of been able to stop or pass around, why do drivers assume in areas like this and in town have to try and keep up to speed limit. Slow is marked on road for a reason.
It takes just a second to hit a car that pulls out in the line of traffic, you need to go to the funny farm because you live in a world of your own….
You are so boring
Yes, that junction is slightly oblique but not enough to see a car approaching from Far enough away to be able to stop in time. The real problem with that junction is idiot pedestrians who try crossing the road right on the corner and stand right on the kerb blocking the eye line of the driver trying to negotiate the crossing.
Very true, but I also agree with the comment that the new building should have been set back from St James St by a few feet.
Writing this at 22:10 and both cars are still there. Considering nobody was seriously hurt, how long does it take to recover two cars?
Who actually cares
Well no guesses as to who’s fault that one’s going to be
The taxi driver will be blamed, even if it was not the fault of the taxi driver, the police will never admit to be at fault…
More uninsured drivers no doubt.
Ask the Licensing department if taxi drivers are insured??? They have so many checks you would not believe it, DBS, every six months, insurance checks now on line for the council, compliance checks every year, £10 million insurance cover, even have to provide registration code numbers from HMRC, to ensure they are registered tax payers….And that is the tip of the iceberg..
All these checks cost money and its the taxi driver that pays, not the council, then ther is the cost of buying a car, that could be over £30.000 just for one vehicle, maintenance can cost thousands a year, then council fees well over £500 a year….
This is not a 9 to 5 job, they work very long hours with no paid holidays or sick pay..
Well perhaps qwerty king was insinuating the cop car was uninsured ( assuming he or she is that stupid)
What a load of twadle, they’re scruffy eat in their cars flout red lights and speed limits daily claim they’re professional drivers and charge the earth.
As for the police vehicle it will have an IDR system in it which records use of indicators brakes accelerator etc so if the driver was at fault they’ll be held accountable.
Men, it’s almost like no matter your skills – HGV, police, taxi – you can’t avoid being in an accident in Newport centre.
It’s almost like, wait for it, there are some flaws in urban design?
But naaaaah, “someone broke some rule and wasn’t 100% focused 100% of the time like a robot, it’s easy for humans to be 100% correct all the time” so it’s all okay, they are to blame and we don’t need to think of any changes.
I hope they get done for impersonating a police officer. :->
Not saying the taxi was at fault this time but Taxi’s need to slow down, they are always speeding and getting up your backside so close, are they allowed in the bus lanes? as always coming up St James Square very fast!
Yes they are allowed on the red carpet, providing they have passengers…
They are allowed to pick-up or set-down passengers at a bus stop, or yellow lines..
It can be very convenient for passengers, especially for passengers with a disability…
You have to love the irony of the Isle of Wight Police this morning announcing yet another one of their initiatives to enforce driving standards on the Isle of Wight. By the look of this they should start with their own drivers. Of course we all know that their initiative is really about persecuting easy targets and nothing to do with driving standards, after all we can see here the example they are setting!
crashing into the pigs goon son!!
the police are not at fault
police today!!!
who do they think they are, taking over the streets and causing havoc in the street of the little island the silly tossers
people these days driving like maniacs!! these little buggers getting there drivers license from legoland, buying a vauxhall corsa and driving round like the own the place. grow up get a life and move to the mainland you narcissistic little twats!
You think the mainland is any different? It isn’t.
the copper who was sat in the car and the taxi driver knows exactly what happened , so ask them why pay out for full investigation and probably the copper/coppers been put on leave on full pay the taxi drive prob won’t get anything irrespective who’s to blame
If only they had been on foot patrol!
