Police have closed a main road near Newport this morning (Sunday) following reports of a serious collision between a car and a runner on Blackwater Hollow.
A witness has said that a runner came out of the cycle path parallel with Sandy Lane and into the path of an oncoming car which could do nothing to avoid the collision.
Members of the public along with an off-duty nurse administered first aid before emergency services arrived.
Police are on the scene and a diversion is in place through Highwood Lane. Delays are expected as Police believe the road will be closed for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile Southern Vectis have announced that because of the accident, Route 3 buses will not be able to serve Bohemia Corner, Pagham, Rookley or Blackwater Mill and will instead divert via Merstone.
UPDATE @ 13:45 – The casualty has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Blackwater Hollow has now re-opened and the Route 3 bus will resume normal service.

Accident inevitable here, cyclists ride straight out into traffic, especially children, you are onto road without warning, should be gated in some way and at least better visibility before coming onto road. Hopefully person will recover.
I had a very near miss last week at that same spot due to a cyclist cutting across in front of me with no warning, are there any road laws these lycra idiots obey?
Could that have been down to your slow reaction times reg?
God hope he will be ok, by the sounds of it he didn’t look, I know as a pedestrian we have right of way but still no excuse for lack of awareness. Poor driver must be beside themselves, imagine knocking someone over
“I know as a pedestrian we have right of way”
actually,.. (according to the latest issue of the highway code), if _crossing_ a road (i.e. from side to side, like there, from cycle track to cycle track) without a marked pedestrial crossing (& there isn’t one there),…
Pedestrians DO NOT have priority !
Well that was a silly thing to do
Ok thanks to the guy who sits in his car on merstone lane and makes a big problem with traffic flow.
Oh dear. How awful. Hope the person makes a full recovery…
If it had been the car driver’s fault there would have been the usual rash of comments about old drivers, young drivers, drunk drivers, drugged drivers or speeding drivers by now, but nothing about pedestrians taking responsibilty.
This will occur more and more as electric cars being so very quiet take their toll on the unaware.
Oft, joggers have music in their ears too.
Sad, but true.
Agree & disagree with regards to the frequency of these unfortunate incidents due to the increase of EVs on the roads along with the modern day acceptance & reliance of mobile phone / ear bud use. They don’t generate the same audible presence of a combustion powered vehicle, however, the principles of road safety & crossing the road should remain the same inline with the guidance communicated within the highway /green cross code. Where it is indicated (& taught as a child), that when crossing a road, the primary sense of sight (see) is commonly referenced along with hearing ‘listen’. Basic principles to increase your life expectancy. Hope the injured party recovers soon but come on readers, take some personal responsibility.
Not surprised the car didn’t stop in time if it was those two salad dodgers in the car.
Sadly many joggers get overly ‘obsessed’ with ‘beating their own target times’ they think they need to ‘achieve’ that common observation goes out of the window.
A sort of o.c.d mentality of ‘having’ to beat a certain time, endangers them and others as the car driver will feel awful forever.
Grow up, and realise ‘it doesn’t matter’ shaving off a few minutes on a silly self imposed target, but life and broken bodies do.
Who said running is good for you.
What a moron going for a run on that road a main road with no side walks and fast moving traffic there are more sensible places to go for a run than the roads which are actually provided for motorised vehicles not padestrians and certainly not cyclists and horse riders who have there very one cycle tracks and bridal paths and foot paths to ride and run on that we motorists are not allowed to drive on so no sympathy get off the roads
if you can be bothered to read the article, .. he wasn’t running ‘on the road’, he ran out of the cycle track on to the road…
(p.s. in the UK we correctly call then ‘pavements’, not ‘side-walks’)
After reading this comment the expression “What a moron” seems very apt.
