A heartwarming act of kindness has seen an Isle of Wight man’s lifelong wish come true, thanks to Age UK Isle of Wight, his family and community support.
The local charity has shared the story of Barry, the first recipient of its Gift of Friendship programme, who recently enjoyed a special owl encounter at his home.
Barry, originally from the Isle of Wight, had become increasingly isolated following the loss of his wife. Through the charity’s Gift of Friendship initiative, part of its Good Neighbour Scheme, he was matched with a volunteer who supported him in rebuilding confidence and getting out more.
As time went on, Barry began attending the charity’s Chatty Brew events, where he formed new connections. During one visit, he shared a long-held wish to see an owl up close.
His interest dates back to his career as an aeronautical engineer, including time spent at Boscombe Down, where he would regularly see owls nesting in hangars but never had the chance to get close to one.
After hearing about his wish, Barry’s volunteer worked with Age UK Isle of Wight and his family to arrange a special experience.
With his family funding the visit and support from The Falconry Experience Isle of Wight, Barry spent an afternoon meeting 3 owls named Rebel, Penny and Shadow.
Reflecting on the day, Barry said:
“When you’ve dreamed of something for ever and ever and it comes true, you just can’t believe it.
“That’s made my day. Absolutely.”
Joe Hodgkinson, of Age UK Isle of Wight, has said:
“Barry’s story is a lovely example of what Gift of Friendship is all about. It is about helping people feel more connected, supported and able to enjoy life again. Barry had been through a difficult period of isolation, and with the support of his volunteer he began rebuilding confidence and reconnecting socially. To then see one of his lifelong wishes come true was incredibly special for everyone involved.”
“We are hugely grateful to Barry’s family for helping make the day possible, and to The Falconry Experience Isle of Wight for creating such a memorable and meaningful afternoon. It was a wonderful reminder of how much kindness, friendship and community support can mean.”
The Gift of Friendship service launched in 2025 as part of the charity’s Good Neighbour Scheme, with support from the Julia Rausing Trust and Age UK. It aims to help older people achieve personal goals, rebuild confidence and reduce isolation.
Age UK Isle of Wight hopes Barry’s story, alongside a video shared on its Facebook page, will encourage more people to volunteer or seek support through the service.
