The number of Islanders claiming out of work benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance and Universal Credit has nearly doubled in the past 12 months.
According to the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics, a total of 5,140 Islanders were claiming out of work benefits from the Government in November, a rise of 295 on the previous month.
Unsurprisingly, the number of people without a job on the Isle of Wight in 2020 has soared from 2,885 in November 2019 to 5,140 in November 2020 – a rise of 43% year-on-year.
The ONS figures show that there is more unemployed in the 25-49 age group than any other, with 2,655 claimants. There are almost 1,000 more men out of work locally than there are women (3,095 v 2,045).
Today’s data shows that 6.5% of the working age population of 16 to 64-year-olds are out of work – that’s 0.2% more than the rest of the country.

Well that’s that then, isn’t it? Obviously the solution is to build thousands of more houses, according to this corrupt gov. Where are the jobs for them all going to come from? Who knows. But still, petrol on fire and all that.
This number will treble, and no seasonal work in the future.
You best rely on Rich Overners retirement funds to keep the Island ticking over.
Or councillors saving paying NI, insurance, tax, etc by paying those on sick and unemployed cash in private business, yet being at the head of business on the IW council.
Couldn’t make it up, yet, don’t need to, as it is true. Yet as it is your bestitee, you don’t wish to know such.
Those who gain from such building don’t like the truth being told on here Pepe.
Where are the new jobs coming from?
Far too many businesses have closed down, and they will not be back for years in the
Current climate!
Yet the likely very c orrupt c ouncil are to build thousands of homes, with no jobs, so crime will be abhorrent then.
The council Leaders on the Island are useless and clueless
The only thing left to do.kn the Island is build in it, It’s no longer a viable Holiday option for many, Not much left to see and do anymore.
