Over 100 trucks, lorries and vans from a number of different Isle of Wight firms showed their support for the NHS by tooting their horns in a special drive-past parade outside St Mary’s Hospital this evening (Thursday).
Just before the weekly Clap for Carers event at 20:00, vehicles of all shapes, sizes and purposes joined together to put on an unusual but unforgotten parade.
George Jenkins of George Jenkins Transport arranged the event as a follow on from the efforts last week. His firm has produced a mural on the side of an artic trailer which led the way from Stag Lane to St Mary’s Roundabout.
A Just Giving page has been set up by George, with all monies raised going directly to the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. You can donate at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/georgejenkinscovid19.
WATCH: 100 vehicles take part in Clap for Carers drive-past

Hahahahahah DJing six did z
I honestly dont think you live on the same planet as the rest of us,everyone involved was social distancing and also doing it in there OWN time, many had done 14hour shifts-is that how long you have been drooling on your keyboard??? For god sake you cretin get a bloody grip!!!!
“Many had done 14 hour shifts”…..How does that fit in with drivers hours and working time directive then? Whilst I applaud the idea of it, I think it was for advertising more than anything else. I noticed that the skip lorries and tippers looked remarkably clean considering the nature of their businesses.
Non-essential travel. They should be fined
Vote Dave down if you like but he has a point.
They may be doing it voluntarily and in their own time but their chosen method of showing support goes directly against the “non-essential travel” restrictions we are all following.
They could have shown support by sounding their horns back at base without driving an inch.
It wouldn’t have been as dramatic but it would have been safer and, more importantly, it would have been legal – driving anywhere just to sound your horn is not essential no matter how well intentioned.
It would also have set a good example for the rest of us.
And what did you do clap from your living roomat 8pm or just sit in your nosy chair with you binoculars?? We are all breaching government guid lines breathing infected air at 8pm every Thursday!!!! Your so stupid
All the workers in every hospital should have fire works everyday for turning up to save lives and comfort those who die.
Lets follow original mark and hope he never dies or needs an NHS worker to support his last hour, I don’t feel this was a breach in any means, captain Tom should be fined next for taking to much time away from home….YAWN, its exceptional times clearly your not an exceptional person
Trust the drug driver’s to be up front..well done to all who took part though
You’ve obviously been paying no attention to what Cptn Tom has in fact been doing, have you.
And to say that this collection of pollution must be supported as a way of raising money, or else a person is anti-NHS, is bizarre.
Jenkins only done it for advertisement
@Origional Mark how are they gonna get the virus if they are staying in their cab?!
Well done!!
Spanner and Dave get a life it was a lovely gesture well done to you all
Strange and confusing times, shut car parks to stop people taking exercise allowed in law but see it as OK to make a non essential journey.
All hospital, care workers, supermarket workers and many others are putting themselves at greater risk than many of us. However this is not the way to acknowledge as
1. Its focus is only on the NHS – not the many others
2. It demonstrates the law enforcement ignoring one breach of the law whilst fining others
Just the precedent I was waiting for. I’m going stir crazy with just a short walk every day locally but tomorrow I’m going to take a long drive all around the island I will make sure I go past St Mary’s, just in case I get asked why I am out by the police.
What a pointless exercise more an excuse for certain transport companies trying to get publicity.
How can driving around honking your hooter help .We know the NHS are doing a great job so stay at home stay safe.
Oh for goodness sake……….. it was brilliant!
a bit ott
All that pollution in the air ,just as we were getting cleaner , theres people in that hospital who are very ill and the last thing they want is all that racket going on ,have some consideration
The NHS workers are not the only Key Workers during this terrible time…
They are working under extreme conditions I know, but, they are Medical Professionals and are doing what they are paid to do.
The Armed Forces must have just about the most hazardous jobs going (being shot at during times of conflict).
This is not to belittle the work being done by Doctors and Nurses (infact ALL NHS staff), but come on people.
How come all of the vehicles are being praised for supporting the NHS in what is a non-essential journey, and being allowed to get away without official censure, when the Spitfire Preservation Trust were told they could not fly to celebrate Captain Tom’s Birthday yesterday as it was deemed a non-essential journey?
One this is for sure here, they have got you all fighting at each other’s throat, and missing what’s really happening. Most of you are clueless about how we are being set up here. Just look at what’s being said by the assholes in charge ( government). The world will never be the same, and social distancing will have to say, etc etc. China’s social credit is where we are going. Don’t know what that is? Well I suggest you do some research and wake up. And no these aren’t conspiracies, these are facts ,Agenda 2030, social credit system. Use google and you will see your future. Especially when I see 200,000 calls to the brown shirts, oh sorry the police ,grassing on their neighbours.wow ,what have we become. Soon, hello is that the police, my neighbour hasn’t put his bins out on the right day and he’s not recycling like he should. Think this won’t happen.? Let’s see then shall we.
@Mr Justice
Once the removal of paper currencies is complete – then the process is done.
If you upset the order.. then the following happens…
the state instructs the passport agency to suspend your passport (an employee changes the status to suspended) – you try to leave the country – you are denied the right to leave and can not enter another country as your passport is suspended.
the state instructs that your access to digital cash is deactivated (your bank simply instructs an employee to change your account status from active to inactive) – your debit card won’t work anywhere – no food, cash, bills paid or supplies for you.
the state instructs that your driving licence be suspended – (They instruct DVLA to change your licence status to suspended) – the police arrest you for driving on a suspended licence if you try to drive anywhere.
the state instructs that your access to state benefits be denied (they instruct the Department of work and pensions to change your benefit status to not eligible) – you try to claim benefits the employee says – computer says no and as you have no active bank account – no way of paying benefits in, even if they did let you claim.
the state instructs law enforcement to consider you an undesirable fugitive – the police computer is updated – you are arrested on sight for crimes against the state, as well as being homeless, because you couldn’t pay rent (account inactive), your car off the road (licence suspended), begging because you are hungry (debit card doesn’t work – account inactive) and no benefits as told not eligible and cannot leave country as no passport or digital cash to do it with.
We only need the cash element to go and the state can, if it so wishes shut down your entire life from behind a computer screen.
That is full and complete control, of your life, without anyone even realising it. (once paper cash goes, the state can ruin you if it chooses to)
100% right sir. But people just dont believe it! A year ago if I said the world will be on lockdown over a virus that kills about the same as the flu( do your research) people would have laughed at me. And……
Get a life. What has this got to do with what this article is about?
Blind!
yes mr justice absolutely correct.
These fools cannot see that the government is making full use of this crisis to implement more draconian surveillance and security measures, as demanded by the weak and pathetic sheeple.
sacrificing liberty for security is the preserve of the mindless drones and poorly educated knuckle draggers.
about as much as your post has smithy – hypocrite.
Idiots, how the hell is this an essential journey, one rule for one & one for the rest of us
Can’t fault George for his sentiment and support for the NHS but sounding your horn near a hospital always used to be something to avoid trying not to disturb the sick people within!
How does 100 trucks passing St Mary’s help? The single lone truck that was parked in the St Mary’s roundabout site carried more meaning and emotional clout. I feel sorry for those people who are mourning the loss of a loved one at this time, and those that are seriously I’ll in the hospital, as this whole clapping and drive-by seems disrespectful.
I’m sure there will be many an occasion, after this crisis, when respects to those who worked across the whole key-worker spectrum, will be shown the gratitude they deserve.
our clapping gives the impression things are working and lets the government off the hook. In fact it lets them join us, as if they’re not responsible for the perilous situation in which healthcare workers find themselves, and for the deaths of healthcare staff. They can step out at 8pm, Boris Johnson (now he’s back), Hancock, Rishi Sunak and all the others, as if they moved heaven and earth to provide tests and equipment for our medical staff and care workers.
I have known George for several years and he is a very charitable person helping those that deserve it. He has got off his back side to do this charitable thing and yes the publicity it has caused has proved positive towards helping the NHS. At least he is giving and not sponging off the country and the tax payer for everything they can get. Well done George and all the other truckers van drivers and everyone concerned
I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all the bus drivers, postmen and women and all the other postal delivery people, shop workers, food growers and manufacturers, farmers, army and our police men and women, refuse collectors, and anyone else I’ve forgotten who are still working to keep the country up and running in these difficult times.
I think they all sometimes get forgotten about. As well as the very necessary jobs all the workers in the NHS and all those in the caring community do, we must remember all these other people who are out there putting themselves at more risk than those who are merely staying home or just taking the limited times out for shopping or a short walk.
So well done to all those people in those jobs. I, for one, greatly appreciate all of you.
I’d like to thank the postal service who daily face the bite of a cocker spaniel, the rubbish collectors, police and pcso, our own Prison Officers and OSGs who have No PPE at all, all commercial drivers, military and so many others… Why just the nhs, as I myself work 12 – 15 hours a day , it’s my job…. a clap is fine but 100 trucks outside a hospital for the very poorly people Is wrong, and yet I’m not allowed to walk in the park with my family for more than an hour or drive anywhere. Seems to me that it all needs to stop. If you want to raise money then do so but stay in keep safe and stop clapping as your upsetting my dogs
