The Older Drivers Forum is running an awareness week between Monday 26th September and Friday 30th September at various venues across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, supporting mature motorists to remain on the road safely for longer.
On the Island an event is being held at Newport Minster, St Thomas’ Square, Newport on Friday 30th September. The event is free to attend and no appointment is needed. Islanders are urged to pop in anytime between 09:30 and 15:00 and visit the various stands offering advice and support.
Sgt Rob Heard, the chair of the forum says:
“The Older Drivers Forum is about keeping mature motorists on the road safely for longer. We give advice not only for older drivers, but also for friends, families and GP’s. At the event you will find advice on brushing up your skills, booking a driving assessment, getting advice on health and well being issues, renewing your licence and much more.
“We have had many visitors to our events over the years and all have found them extremely helpful on keeping them safe and mobile. In December last year we even featured on the BBC One Show and gave advice and support to Jenny Bond and John Sergeant on keeping safe on the roads”.
Advice will be available on:
• brushing up your skills
• booking a driving assessment
• arranging a regular eyesight test
• getting advice on health and wellbeing issues that could affect driving ability
• renewing your licence at 70
• learning about road safety and consequences of not being fit to drive
• discover alternatives to being independent without a car
The Forum is made up of experts in road – from representatives from the emergency services, to charities, local authorities and businesses specialising in keeping older people on the road. If you know an older driver, have contact with them regularly in your job or are perhaps just concerned for a friend or relative who is still driving then the Older Driver Forum may be able to help.
