The NSPCC has launched a fundraising appeal to help make up for a shortfall in the income generated at its Cowes charity shop – 1 of just 2 remaining in the country.
The building located at Shooters Hill in Cowes might look unremarkable from the outside but is in fact anything but. The NSPCC’s little shop at the top of the hill with the green façade has over the years been a meeting place for friends, a daily port of call for people who pop in with donations or to see what they can find in the little shop of treasures.
It is also 1 of only 2 remaining official NSPCC charity shops in the country and has been at the heart of the community in Cowes for almost 30 years. It is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteers – some of whom have been there since it opened.
But like many shops up and down the country its doors have been closed for almost a year due to COVID-19 and as a result, has been unable to accept donations or make any sales.
Gemma Graves, Community Fundraising Manager for the Isle of Wight explains:
“Last year was difficult for us all. And we’ve seen our lives, and the lives of our children, change in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
“It’s been a difficult start to this year too and we know it’s going to take time for things to get easier. But we can do so much when we all join together – even if we have to keep our distance.
“The Covid-19 crisis has had such a big impact on our shop. It’s been incredibly sad to see the doors shut and to know that it’s not providing the support it’s been offering since 1982 to the Cowes community.
“To help our shop be there for another 30 years, we’re asking people to support our fundraising appeal. By simply visiting our Just Giving page and giving what you can you can help us be there for children, throughout the pandemic and beyond.”
To donate safely and securely, visit the appeal page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nspcc-shop-cowes.
The shop will re-open once lockdown restrictions ease and will be ready to take donations once again. The shop also hopes to recruit more volunteers once open.

Sounds like the shop has covid 19, maybe there’s a new variant we haven’t been told about.
