Islanders who would normally spend the last evening of Cowes Week taking in spectacles such as the Red Arrows and the annual fireworks are reminded that both displays will not take place tonight (Friday).
The event is one of the Island’s biggest traditions, with thousands of Islanders heading down to Cowes’ seafront areas each year early in the evening in order to bag the best spot at iconic locations such as The Green and Cowes Esplanade.
This year, however, tradition must face a change, as both events will not take place.
Fireworks and aerobatic displays are not the only things that have been cancelled today. Competitors on the water have been left ashore as racing has been cancelled – just days after yacht crews faced hours of delays as the AP/AP flag was flown – signalling postponement due to little wind.
Residents, tourists, and competitors alike can look forward to next year though, with an official announcement revealing that the world’s best-known sailing regatta will return in July of next year.

Fireworks weren’t cancelled in Cowes. They have just finished now…
I don’t think so. I heard them in Ryde. Unless someone was letting off fireworks in Ryde as well. Which wouldn’t be that unusual, I’m afraid to say, but I’m pretty sure it must have been from Cowes, usually do hear it when they have them over there.
