7 Nigerian men who were arrested at gunpoint on board the Nave Andromeda by the Special Boat Service have been bailed.
The major maritime security incident took place off the coast of the Isle of Wight on Sunday and involved both the military and local authorities – and attracted worldwide media attention.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the group of Nigerian nationals have been bailed in relation to the criminal investigation whilst investigators continue their enquiries.
They has been arrested on suspicion of hijacking – an offence which carries a maximum term of life imprisonment.
Although the men have been bailed, they remain detained under Border Force powers in relation to their immigration status.
The Nave Andromeda has now left Southampton just days after it was stormed by the SBS off the coast of Ventnor.

Brilliant move whoever is responsible for that needs sacking they will never be seen again to stand trial
Does ‘Detained by the border force’ not tell you that they are still in some form of custody. How about we send them back to Nigeria and let the Nigerian police shoot them, as they seem happy to do with local citizens.
Problem is the Border force are a pretty leaky lot, they’ve probably lost more than they have interned
Just remember This is the day you nearly caught captain jack sparrow!
Don’t You worry yourself.. has one bothered to ask yourself Where has all the rum gone
Detained means they are still in custody. They have not been released onto the streets of Britain……….yet!!!!!
From reading the article I think they have still been detained so cant go anywhere and will be until they go to trial, so think a good job has been done.
They have achieved what they are most ‘famous’ for, scamming.
They pay the ships crew or Capt’, a fee, to be taken over to the UK, pretend to hi-jack such, know they will be arrested and then they KNOW they are on UK soil, never again to leave.
The ships crew and Capt’ sail off, Scot free, seemingly as ‘victims, instead of what they likely are, as crooked as the low life pirates, who will be free within weeks, to do as their fellow charming grateful countrymen do, and fill wombs, oft if willing or not, and rob, cheat, steal, drug deal, using the most violent means to get what they want despite being given a home, and money.
So, to them even a few months in jail will be luxury living, especially ‘knowing’ the joyous time of vile crime, women, and drugs which awaits them upon their release.
The naiviety shown on here is truly worrying.
NO, I won’t have that.
I am now of the opinion that a few are very generous people.
I have, last week received a letter from Nigeria, saying that a Nigerian has won a fortune in the Nigerian lottery, and he wishes to move to the UK. But because of money laundering rules, can’t just open a bank account here.
So he is paying me ONE MILLON British pounds for just allowing him to deposit in 12 m GBP into my account for a week, until he is here when he can then open his own bank account.
I gave him my account details, and the money was supposed to be wired over today. But, just my luck, the ATM, when I checked must be broken as my card said my account balance was zero, and I had just been paid this month so know it had several hundred in it, typical to get a glitch today of all days.
Say what you will about the Pirates, but you would NEVER get anyone British giving a million to you just for a weeks use of a bank account.
So not all Nigerians are bad people.
And they will “vanish” into the underworld.
I usually hate your comments, but in this instance you are right and measured!
Shame you don’t.
They’re not migrants they are pirates. Whatever they may have thought they were
Pirates, if found guilty.
Ahaaar
Coming soon to a flat near you ..
and telling everyone back home to come and join them.
One must say this is terribly a ship outcome.
In there defence one did here they didn’t put up a fight when the (special benefits service) turned up though!
I hope someone lets that copper with the binoculars know that he can come down now.
Good ‘detained’ or they would have done a runner to somewhere else on the mainland and never to be seen again.
so, you’ve not heard the one about providing ‘detainees’ with travel tickets and told to make their own way to a detention centre then
Should of put them back on boat at least that’s gone
Detained until we can find then a lovely house to live in.. Let’s all face it the UK is never gonna send them anywhere. Don’t have the minerals anymore.
Well, the EU is one big war zone so they came by sea, to good old blighty that will treat them with compassion, feed them, give lots of money and a nice home.
Then we can all be enriched with the wonderful diversity they bring, good old blighty….
There was a very good reason our Grandparents never allowed these people rights, and despite years of brainwashing to try to disprove such, it now seems our ancestors were indeed correct.
They are still detained. The police have ‘released’ them on police bail but the Border Force are holding them in continued detention under immigration powers. Technically, they can still remain in the same police cell but I assume that they have probably been transferred to an Immigration Removal Centre where they will be interviewed under the Immigration Act 1971 for their alleged asylum claim. As in the majority of Nigerian asylum claims, they will fall to be refused as many are economic migrants.
How can anyone be so stupid. They used to hang people for piracy on the high seas. Even though they are in “custody” (whatever that means), they will melt into the black underworld never to be seen again until they commit their next crime. Do our judges really hate the British people so much?
Lol, release the gammon.
Return them whence they came. Make an example of them else others will try the same thing.
Unfortunately that’s easier said than done. They have to be documented to be returned and their passports, if they had them in the first place, are undoubtedly floating somewhere in the Atlantic. The Courts have made so many rulings over the years and even recently, in the return ability of removals, especially failed asylum seekers, it has made the Border Force job much harder. Any new initiatives particularly on removing failed asylum seekers is very often challenged in the Courts by immigration lawyers, often on legal aid. And before anyone states that other European countries remove failed asylum seekers easily, they, I can assure you, have the same problems with their Courts.
You have to be kidding me
First things first, they are breaking covid rules
Secondly, they tried to hijack a ship
Thirdly, they have threatened the crew
And the list keeps going
Great decision people/person who bailed them
Edit: As well as the list above they immigrated illegally
We will be providing Housing & Benefits I expect before too long !
A harrr me jim lads!
Let’s be honest…they’ll just disappear if let go.mission acc then.
I rekon the captain was in on it.paid a hefty some too bring them.they thought theyre be freed eventually so let’s risk it.easy pickings and laws here tbf.
