The Isle of Wight Council is introducing new regulations on Union Street in Ryde designed to free-up valuable parking bays for both shoppers and visitors alike.
By providing a regular supply of parking spaces, the council hopes businesses in the area will see an economic boost from increased passing trade – although the new arrangements may be seen as a hindrance for businesses and their employees.
It had been identified that some motorists have been using Union Street for long-term parking by moving their vehicle each hour to a different parking zone within the road.
Under the new arrangements, which come into effect from Friday 20th September 2019, a single parking zone will cover the full-length of Union Street meaning vehicles will have to leave after one hour and park elsewhere.
Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said shoppers, visitors and local businesses would benefit from a regular turnover of convenient parking. He said:
“Across the country, one of the reasons some town centres are struggling is the difficulty of parking.
“The new regulations, which apply seven days a week, will ensure there is a regular turnover of parking bays in Union Street and encourage people to shop local.”
The new restriction will be: ‘Limited Waiting 1 Hour No Return Within 1 Hour 8am to 6pm, seven days a week’.
Long stay car parks are located in Ryde at Lind Place, Garfield Road, Green Street, St. Thomas’s Street (upper and lower), Quay Road and Appley Park.

I think that 2hrs would be better 1 doesn’t give you much time for walking around does it
I think an hour is ample time to go around shops in Ryde.
There is hardly any left
as a point of interest and as its been identified, does anyone know how many vehicles have been parking here all day (and popping out every hour to move their vehicles)?
Just a guess, but could it be workers parking their cars, as there is nowhere else for them to park? I do know a couple of evening workers who do just that.
And what about the shop owners As it is they have to move every hour where are supposed to find parking after taking spaces away in the different zones of Union Street. The council “as in the good old days” should again allocate one free car space per shop.
Will it change for disabled drivers
Yes what shouldn’t it ,as most of the so called disabled can walk better than me
All disabilities are not visible..
There won’t be any charges to park in Union Street. It’s the estate agents and shop keepers who swap their cars over every hour.
There is a large longterm carpark next to the Coop with twittens into the High Street and Cross Street for the top of Union Street and there are two large carparks at lower St Thomas Street with access to lower Union Street. Oiks will still park on the bus stop outside Spoons to go into the post office and on the disabled bays opposite to go into Domino’s.
Wish we had this in Newport …….you are really lucky in Ryde with so much free parking…….just saying
Try living here.. Its a nightmare!
Maybe somebody will grow a brain a d get rid of the chunks of pavement and railings that nobody ever needed.
Absolute waste of money
if we were planning for the future then shouldn’t the council be considering how to eliminate cars altogether from union street? I had a vision of how it could be, last time I was walking down the hill observing all the cars and the fumes that make this otherwise delightful street of interesting shops and great places to eat, simply noisy and smelly and chaotic.
how much more of an attraction would Union street Ryde be if we had it pedestrianised like the upper high street? maybe with some ‘decks’ outside the eaterys for dining with a view… and maybe in the future an solar electric tram going up and down – San Francisco style?? just an idea 🙂
Its funny how one of the parking wardens park there car in restricted zones and never gets a ticket! I wonder if he will obey the new one hour restriction
That is good, it’s a pity though that parking on Riverway in Newport has been stopped except for 2 bays, penalising the many businesses with no off road parking on that part of the industrial estate.
