Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have installed a new bench Victoria Recreation Ground overlooking the cricket field commemorating the late Terry Woodford.
Terry passed away in June this year and during his life worked tirelessly to encourage a range of sports including hockey and petanque at the Ground as well as being heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the Pavilion before emigrating.
NCCC Chair Cllr Geoff Brodie said:
“We at NCCC were delighted to help recognise Terry Woodford’s contribution over many years to sport at Victoria Recreation Ground, before he retired to New Zealand. Many family members still live here and I was delighted to meet them and as a former member of the Newport Vics Sports and Social Club to reminisce about past events.”
The bench was unveiled by 2 of Terry’s daughters, Kim and Karen, who were joined by friends and family. The bench can be found along the footpath past the Pavilion, overlooking the cricket field after it was suggested Terry would’ve enjoyed sitting in the spot watching the cricket.
Karen and Kim said:
“Our Dad would have been very honoured to have been remembered in this way especially as his bench overlooks the sports field where so many hockey festivals were played. His wife Maisie, in New Zealand is extremely touched by the generosity of NCCC”.
