A member of the public has been publicly thanked by police for assisting in the arrest of a man suspected of committing an offence in Newport yesterday afternoon (Friday).
Officers were in attendance at the Morrison’s supermarket when they became aware of a male who they believed to have committed a robbery. The 2 Constables quickly made moves to apprehend the suspect and made an arrest.
A quick thinking member of the public, who had been shopping with his children at the time of the incident, made his way to the scene after seeing officers struggling to restrain the suspect.
The man, who’s identity is currently unknown, assisted the 2 Police Constables with restraining the suspect until further help arrived.
Speaking on Facebook, one of the officers involved said:
“If you were the male who was shopping with your children in Morrison’s and you assisted my colleague and I in restraining a male in the car park who we had arrested on a suspicion of a robbery offence then thank you!”
“Often members of the public help us at incidents in one form or another and at the scene we don’t get time to obtain their details.
”Sometimes they even risk getting hurt themselves. I often see bodyworn video footage of the public assisting us and they don’t get the credit they should.
”If that was you then I hope you see this!”
If you or someone you know was the member of the public who assisted officers, you can get in touch with the police via their Facebook page.
Island Echo has approached Hampshire Constabulary for a statement.

Well done to all involved in getting this thief under control and arrested. Probably needed to steal to fund his drug habit. Fool.
I see Morrison’s security are still lacking in the observation department.
Well done to the member of the public who helped. To many people on the island moan and groan but never do anything to actually help.
