A 4-hour stand off on a residential road in Ryde has been brought to an end after riot Police forced entry to a premises and forcibly removed the man at the centre of the heated situation.
It was at around 17:00 this afternoon that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was alerted to an incident developing on the usually quiet Corbett Road, at the junction with Pound Mead.
Local residents have described hearing glass smashing when objects were thrown out of a top floor window.
As previously reported by Island Echo, cordons were erected and officers took up position outside a block of flats.
Now, 6 mainland-based officers have stormed the property whilst clad in riot gear and armed with shields, arresting and removing a male from the property and therefore bringing the hostile situation to a safe conclusion.
The male was heard protesting loudly as he was flung in the back of a cell van.
Police are yet to issue a statement on the incident, but it is thought the individual has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station as opposed to being transferred to a medical or mental health facility.
The incident has involved a large number of resources from both sides of the Solent, with some units retasked to another ongoing incident tonight.
Cordons in the area have now been lifted.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Police have confirmed that a 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remains in custody this morning.
It’s now known that the male barricaded himself inside the address and allegedly made threats to officers.

Riot police? Bit of an exaggeration. A few wooden tops with shields and battens from the mainland to arrest one individual
Those officers are more skilled and braver than you Mr W
It’s not even just about being more skilled and braver but the wider risk of other people getting hurt if they only sent 1 or 2 in. As much as I sometimes think they may exaggerate when someone is throwing glass and being volatile inside a house where he could have a number of weapons, could jump out on anyone and threatening people I think it turns from a tantrum to a real life situation where someone hasn’t a care in the world, heated as they are I think the families of the police officers and friends of the local neighbour’s are glad they are safe and that the police did not let a mad man overpower them and potentially break into houses and hurt other people in a desperate bid to escape.
Well said,What rhe
Bit embarrassing that IOW officers not capable of arresting one person, huge waste of resources and allowing other, potentially serious crime taking place. We have officers with Taza and armed. This sends message to others and gives ideas to criminals if so simple to tie up most,if not all ,Island police on one side of island while they can commit crime elsewhere.
If you read the article instead of ejaculating you would see that some of the island officers had to leave to attend another incident…
I think you need to read the previous article as well and my comment. It was initially all hands on from Island Police until mainland arrived. How many police you think are on duty in evening ?. I’m sure people who called 101/999 during this where told nothing available. The delay in getting him could of to more serious outcomes,4hrs he could be setting fires or harming another who might of been in flat, I’m sure our officers we’re quite capable except it’s all about protocol and criminals rights and stuff anyone else.
If another criminal was reading IE like me he would know that he would have a good hour to commit a burglary Assault etc before any police could arrive. That’s how they do on mainland and actually create the distraction.
Not all officers are level 2 riot trained so in situations like this they would have to be deployed to limit the risks to other members of the public.
On mainland 3 ordinary police officers no in riot gear, broke into house, moved baracade of furniture, wrestled a man who was holding a knife to a woman, handcuffing and supported woman and children in the home and then rescued and fire fighting, getting their award today. IOW one man took 4hrs and more than a 15 officers !. “Limit risk to public” – they had battons,Tazer and armed officers on scene.
Let’s hope we don’t get any large scale riot’s (10+) like mainland, police would need to hire a ferry to bring 150 + officers over on same ratio.
You have obviously never been in this sort of situation have you so come back when you know what your talking about.
Let me guess what the W stands for in Kev’s title. My guess is it is the first letter of a word sounding very much like anchor.
Now I know why our council tax keeps going up.
It’s not an exaggeration at all, it’s a fact that they are riot police.
Seems a bit over the top for 1 person
You donot know what you are talking about do you.
This is standard procedure. Many decades ago they did the same in my friends guest house. A wanted ‘football hooligan’ turned up at their guest house looking for a room. He seemed perfectly ok, he paid up etc. Then the police turned up, blue lights flashing. He went berserk. Locked the fire door to his room, smashed the window and starting lobbing stuff out of the window. This went on for hours because they couldn’t get through the fire door. In the end they all went silent and his brother who was 6ft 5 and built like a house waited outside the door. The ‘hooligan’ opened it to see if they were gone and the brother had him. So ended a great day in a guest house in sunny Sandown.
“Flung” into the back of the van – is that what’s known as journalistic licence?
Probably has smoked too much weed and now his brain is totally messed up and requires NHS Mental Health services.
Glad it all came to a safe end, if the person requires help hopefully they will receive it, question is why police from mainland ?? cost must of been very high, do IOW police not have the training to of brought this incident to a safe end???????
Well done, could have been another raol moat type incident…go in hard and early rather than let them take the coward’s way out.
The Island is now part of Hampshire . The Emergency Services act on what Hampshire decides .
Good ol Ryde should of got joint top spot for turdtown..
