An Island teenager who has become well-known across the Isle of Wight for her fundraising efforts to support local causes has been recognised by supermarket Morrisons.
Macie Edkins-Wherry has been continuously fundraising since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in order to support various charities and schemes, and has also directly supported the elderly.
In November of last year, Macie saved money from her paper round and gathered donations to enable her to give over 100 gifts and Christmas cards to the elderly in care homes or the community who have no family and would otherwise be without any Christmas cheer.
In March, Macie was recognised by former High Sherriff of the Isle of Wight, Caroline Peel, for her work. Earlier this month, Island Echo reported that Macie’s latest effort was underway, with a raffle being held to raise funds for 4 Island charities.

After several successful collaborations with Newport supermarket Morrisons, the company’s Island Community Champion, Leah Tosdevin, has revealed that Macie will now receive the ‘Little Sunshine Award’, as part of the ‘Make Good Things Happen’ campaign.
Morrisons Community Chamption, Leah Tosdevin, said:
“Macie has been working none stop over the past year, raising over £4792 for many different island charities. She started at the beginning of the pandemic by setting up a raffle to raise money for Carisbrooke Collage, to help them fund a well being/mental health room.
“She raised an amazing £2092. Her second raffle, earlier this year, raised £2700, which was split between the following island charities. IOW NHS Heart failure community nurses, Isle Help Through Crisis Team, Carers IW, No limits Space 4 u, and Mental Health and Wellbeing charity for youths.”
“On top of all of this she also delivered Christmas gifts and then Easter treats to the elderly, with the help of family, friends and the kindness of the community.”
Despite being back at school, Macie aims to raise another £3000 for local charities and community groups.
On giving Macie her Little Sunshine award, Leah said:
“We are proud to support Macie in all her fundraising. We have seen her do so much for the local community and wanted to reward her with our Little Sunshine award.”
