Local artist Valerie Rue is hosting an exhibition of her work, entitled ‘A Melody of Colour’ at The People’s Gallery in Union Street, Ryde until Sunday 14th August.
Romantic by temperament but classical by training, Valerie combines these two aspects in her work. Painting in a style reminiscent of the Impressionists, she finds inspiration in nature and scenes of daily life, while interpreting the refraction of light in a contemporary style.
Valerie enjoys painting the female nude and local characters, often working on newspaper as an evocative base. It frequently happens, by chance, that a phrase or headline from the background catches the eye and adds a surrealistic dimension to the image.
Ms Rue was born in London and spent many years in Aquitaine, France. She now lives permanently on the Isle of Wight. She has a diploma from the Royal College of Music and spent several years teaching the piano and singing before finding her true vocation, painting.
Valerie has a large number of exhibitions to her credit. She has received awards in the UK and France where she won the Grand Prix de Bordeaux, Salon des Artistes independents.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30 to 16:30 each day. Admission is free.
