A date has been set for work to begin on redeveloping the Lidl supermarket on River Way in Newport, which will see the store closed until November.
Construction firm Sturminster Construction will start work on site on Monday 20th June and are expected to continue work for 5 months, with the view to re-opening the store in November. It comes after planning permission was granted by planning officers at the Isle of Wight Council back in April.
The new extension will house a welcome lobby and Danish-style bakery and the interior of the store will refurbished with a premium-looking, muted grey palette to bring it in line with the retailers ‘Lidl of the Future’ look and feel.
Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, Jason Gratton, commented:
“There’s been much anticipation for this new Lidl store and it’s great that we are now in a position to break the ground and start the build. We are extremely grateful for all the support
that we have received so far, and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”
The supermarket, which was crowned Grocer of the Year at the 2015 Grocer Gold Awards, has experienced continued growth over the years, as consumers flock to the shop to discover products ranging from quality British fruit and vegetables to premiums wines from its much coveted Wine Cellar collections.
Lidl’s success shows no signs of slowing, as the latest Kantar Worldpanel results outline its continued growth and market share high of 4.4%.
It is currently unclear what the situation is for existing staff at the store. Island Echo has approached Lidl for a comment.
Lidl in Shanklin will remain unaffected by the Newport closure.
