VIDEO: Island athlete Kimberly Murray, who is aiming to participate in Skeleton at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, has this week been training in Konigssee, Germany.
26-year-old Kim flew out with 4 fellow Talent Group athletes at the tail end of January for several weeks of intense practice with ice baths, steaks and magnesium flakes all on the menu – yum.
The first weekend got underway with sled work, visiting the track and video sessions to prepare to slide on Monday. Since then Kim and her fellow Skeleton athletes have been pushing themselves each day as they develop their skills.
Kim’s said:
“I’ve been away from home for over three weeks now. We’ve sort of reached the delirious stage and are quite literally ploughing on.
“On Monday and Tuesday we had amazing ice. It was slick, fast and pretty. The track was a lot quicker and brought new challenges; I was reminded to steer harder and to react when my sled skids out of control.
“I’m starting to feel at ease with the sport. Like this is what I do. It’s been a while coming but I now know that I am getting there.
“I’ve set my goals and am looking forward to continuing learning and making progress in my goal areas”.
It hasn’t been all work and no play. The group have been able to explore the nearby towns of Konigssee and Salzburg and admire the amazing scenery.
This week snow has hampered training efforts, despite the best efforts of the track’s team.
Kim, Maddy, Brogan, Tim and Marcus have now finished their training for the week and are looking forward to a relaxing weekend.
