Letter to the editor – 10th October 2022
“I am very concerned that Island Road has closed off the old road at the Niton end of St Lawrence on the Undercliff.
“The old road has been used by many walkers every day and sometimes hundreds during the summer. The old road is stable and is a safe walk. The alternative now is to walk on an overgrown and unsafe road due to sharp bends and slopes.
“Island Roads have made the excuse of ‘asbestos’ on the old road (no proof) and if it is hard asbestos then so long as you don’t disturb it there is no problem. The old road is stable and is hard. There is asbestos everywhere.
“Why have Island Roads created an unnecessary hazard for walkers and due to the sharp bend it won’t be long until someone/dog gets hit by a car, motorbike or a bike? Island Roads have not maintained the new road as there is overhanging buddleia.
“Why also did Island Roads dig large posts into the old road it when there was asbestos?”

Isle of Wight

Good question. Island Roads, what have you got to say? You have created a dangerous situation
IW COUNCIL are ******* useless
They let vehicles park on pavements.
Maybe IR are worried someone else will make the road unsafe? Bring back HPR, they are REALLY experienced in making roads safe!!! Ha ha ha.
The Island Roads Company have been given far too much authority, the responsibility for the Island’s road system rests with the Isle of Wight Council, it can’t be just off loaded.
When Island Roads got the contract, I was sure it was to resurface ALL roads on this Island. There are plenty of roads in Ryde, where they have not resurfaced, they just come by every few months and top up the pot holes… and I am sure it is the same in most towns. So why are they not resurfacing… did they break the patting down spoon ??
Island toads bodging island roads say no more .More bodge jobs will be along soon.
Why should there be any asbestos on the old road?
guess years ago they could not reinforce the road with steel, so used asbestos maybe ???
Because it can be safer to leave asbestos undisturbed.
