Cheverton Farm will once again welcome top mountain bikers from across the South of England next month for the final round of the Southern XC MTB Series.
Following the success of last year’s event, even more riders are expected to take to the start line across various categories on Sunday 6th July, with organisers keen to see more local cyclists get involved alongside those travelling from the mainland.
Open to riders of all ages and abilities, the race promotes a ‘come and give it a go’ ethos. Trophies for the event have been provided by Island-based Kreative Studios, with prizes from Wightlink, Wight Mountain and Rapanui.
Spectators are encouraged to come along and enjoy the racing on the scenic Downs above Cheverton Farm. Food and drink will be available from Fat Shaun’s and Coffee Guys on site.
Andrew Hodgson, farm owner and mountain biker, has said:
“Cheverton Farm is delighted to host the final round of the Southern XC MTB Series here on the Isle of Wight.
“I have been a farmer all my life, but as a keen mountain biker, I knew the rolling downland and beautiful woodland at Cheverton could be used for more than just grazing cattle! With the steepest hills and best views on the Island, combined with the vision and imagination of the course builders, what more could a mountain biker want?
“Following on from last year’s event, the challenging course is in good condition and riding well, we look forward to another competitive race this year. I might even try to join in!”
The event has been made possible thanks to the dedication of Julie and Jerry Cooper, who are also behind the Island’s summer road time-trial series and the IOW Classic Road Race.
Julie Cooper has said:
“It’s fantastic to be hosting the final round of the Series on the Island again this year. After the success of last year’s event, we are looking forward to welcoming the top riders from the South of England as well as some local talent – we’re also hoping that the local cycling community will get into the spirit of things this year and sign up for a great day of racing.
“It wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors, especially Wightlink, not to mention Andrew at Cheverton Farm for allowing us to host the event at such a brilliant venue.
“It’s taken a lot of work to prepare a challenging course again and this has been led by landscapers Ben Marsh and Tom Golborne, along with team member Jack Grundy and his dad, David, who have given up their time and worked so hard to get everything ready for next month – the kid’s courses are looking great and our own little star, Finley Manser-Grundy has given them his stamp of approval, so they must be good!”
Best place for cyclists, keep them there.
