Tractors and ploughmen will take to the fields in Godshill this Saturday (19th September) for the Isle of Wight Ploughing Match, with this year’s event also supporting Mountbatten Hospice.
The Isle of Wight Ploughing Match, an annual tradition on the Isle of Wight since the 1940s, will take place at Tresslewood on Newport Road, Godshill, with signs positioned along the road to direct those attending.
Around 33 tractors are expected to take part in the match, with a variety of makes ranging from vintage machines through to modern tractors set to be put through their paces.
Ploughmen will begin opening up the field from 09:30, ahead of the main ploughing getting underway at 10:00.
Competition will continue until 13:00, with the presentation and raffle expected to take place at around 14:30.
For those wondering exactly how competitive ploughing works, there’s much more to judging than simply creating the straightest line across a field. Judges consider the straightness and uniformity of the ploughing, whether competitors maintain an even depth and how well weeds, grass and stubble are buried.
They also walk the furrows to see how firmly they have been laid, while the start, finish and overall appearance of each plot are also taken into consideration.
The event will also see the Crops Competition Awards presented, recognising the hard work and skill that goes into producing a high-quality crop.
Food and refreshments will be available during the event, with Taste Buddies, Plaza Ice Creams and The Leverets providing this year’s food and beverages. Mountbatten Hospice has been selected as the chosen charity for this year’s event, with all proceeds – after event costs – being donated.
