Island Roads has issued a reminder to motorists in East Cowes to use the signed diversion in place during the ongoing York Avenue improvement works in the town.
The highways contractor says that the diversion offers a safe route for all traffic coming in and out of the town including vehicles using the Red Funnel ferry. The reminder comes after comments from those living in the area regarding residential streets being used as rat-runs.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“We are aware of some local concerns about traffic using alternative routes. These alternative routes were not selected as the diversion route as they are not considered suitable for the volume of traffic or the larger vehicles that would normally use York Avenue.
“We encourage all road users to follow the local signage and keep to the official diversion. We have also put out additional signage asking people to use the official route.”
The diversion route is available on the Island Roads website and has been communicated to local stakeholders throughout the York Avenue project. While Wight Fibre is working in Sylvan Avenue, a short diversion incorporating a section of Old Road for residents is in place but not for through-traffic.
The Island Roads spokesperson added:
“A major scheme such as the reconstruction of York Avenue will inevitably cause some short-term local disruption and we continue to work with stakeholders, elected members and residents in an effort to minimise disruption.
“Island Roads would also take this opportunity to thank local residents and businesses, including Red Funnel, for their support and understanding during this essential road improvement scheme.”

It is a wonder that there have not been a spate of accidents where Island Roads have seen fit to block off the left lane of York Avenue just after the bends by Osborne House coming in to East Cowes. This ridiculous blockage causes cars coming out of the side road to assume that no-one is going straight on, thereby pulling out in front of them. It also makes cars going straight on have to stop and wait for oncoming traffic, thereby blocking the aforementioned side road. Island Roads – couldn’t find their own backside with both hands!
Every time you pass the roadworks there is never anybody ever there working, you would not mind if the council are going to pay somebody be working on the job if they are going to dig up roads during a Bank Holiday. Ferry terminal traffic at Cowes just add to the total chaos, when the Ferry itself is running not broken down.
IOW council are useless, could’t organise plan run a piss up at Goddard’s Brewery (Please excuse my language)
