Year 6 students from Barton and Godshill Primary Schools enjoyed a fascinating afternoon learning about career possibilities and the world of work on Friday (14th July).
It forms part of the ‘Start Small, Dream Big’ careers programme which is delivered by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and backed by the Department for Education, aiming to increase awareness of jobs and career pathways available to young people, with an emerging understanding of the link between education and the world of work.
It looks to improve outcomes for pupils by broadening their horizons, challenging stereotypes and developing high aspirations for their futures and the students of Godshill and Barton were able to learn more about 4 diverse career pathways.
Island Echo went along to learn more…
Representatives from UKSA and the Garlic Farm were present, as well as Hector who has long experience in the world of finance and former Barton Primary student, Reece Barrett, who is embarking on a career in sports journalism.
The students were eager to find out more about the variety of careers being spoken about, as well as having ideas of their own about what they would like to do when they grow up. Some dream jobs included becoming footballers, actors and photographers.
Julia Hutchison, Director of Business Development & Marketing at UKSA, said:
“There are lots of really varied job in the maritime sector and they’ve discovered the breadth of careers available. We’re just trying to inspire them.”
Mark Snow, Headteacher of Barton Primary School said:
“Children on the Isle of Wight need aspiration and they’ve been fascinated. It opens their eyes to the possibilities.”
It is hoped that the programme will continue to expand and be delivered to other Island Schools in the future.
