One of Newport’s best-known takeaways appears poised for a comeback after weeks of uncertainty surrounding its future.
Fresh signage has appeared in the window of Stotesburys on Upper St James Street, with the words ‘Under New Management – Opening Soon’ now displayed behind the shop’s familiar blue frontage.
The development comes just weeks after uncertainty surrounded the long-established fish and chip shop following reports the property had been repossessed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a repossession notice was placed in the window earlier this year after the business abruptly closed, initially citing ‘technical issues’. Staff were later seen taking up work at another Newport chip shop, fuelling speculation that Stotesburys may never reopen.
Now, however, preparations appear to be underway for a fresh start at the historic premises.
Stotesburys is believed to date back to the late Victorian era and has traded in Newport for more than 125 years, making it one of the Isle of Wight’s oldest surviving fish and chip shops.
The business has passed through several owners over the decades while retaining its traditional name and distinctive appearance.
Former chef Danny Ditton took over the business in 2023 after previously working there during the COVID period.
At the time, Danny spoke openly about the sacrifices involved in buying the business, including selling his family home and moving into the flat above the shop to finance the purchase, as detailed in Island Echo’s feature on Stotesburys – Newport’s century-old fish & chips legend.
Whether the incoming operators will retain the Stotesburys name and traditional approach remains unclear, but the appearance of the new signage will likely be welcomed by many Newport residents keen to see the takeaway trading once again.
