A repossession notice has been placed in the window of Stotesburys fish and chip shop in Newport, raising fresh concerns about the future of the century-old Isle of Wight business.
The notice, issued by South East Enforcement, confirms that the landlord has re-entered the premises on St James Street and is now in possession of the property.
The development follows the recent closure of the popular chippy, which had been described as temporary due to ‘technical issues’. However, eyebrows were raised when staff were seen taking up employment with another Newport chip shop, Ozzies.
Stotesburys has traded from Nodehill since 1896, making it the oldest surviving fish and chip shop on the Isle of Wight. For decades, it operated as a family-run business, with generations of the Stotesbury family living above the shop and working behind the counter.
After the family stepped back in the early 1960s, the business remained in family hands under the Thompson family, before later being taken on by Meli, who ran the shop for 22 years and maintained its traditional character and loyal customer base.
A new chapter began in 2023, when former chef Danny Ditton took over the business after working there for around 2-and-a-half years. His move into ownership came after a change in career during the COVID pandemic, having previously worked as a bricklayer and plasterer.

At the time, Danny spoke of the personal sacrifices required to take on the historic chippy, including selling his home to raise the necessary funds and moving into the flat above the shop.
This week’s news casts significant doubt over the future of the business.

Sadly another business battered by this INCOMPETENT
Government, there will be no PLAICE left soon.
Lol
This is so sad that there seems to be little hope of Stotesbury’s remaining as a fabulous Chippy that treated their clientele with care and respect. The food was always so good.
Let us hope the business can re-open very soon and continue to serve the people of Newport just like they have been doing for so long. Come on then let us continue to support such a wonderful family owned and run business
These days so many old family owned & run businesses are disappearing off our High streets
Look what sadly happened to the chippie in Lake, now converted to a residential home.
It use to be a great Plaice, the Cod was nice too.
Boom Boom.
Seriously businesses are folding at an unbelievable rate, with everything going up many people seem to have little money left
to spend on such luxuries.
Hi There,.
I totally agree with you. Things “Cod” be alot ‘Batter” if other things were in ‘Plaice’.Although I moved from the Isle of Wight to Yorkshire (things are very much the same as they are down South) in 2019 , having lived on the island since the early 2000’s I remember Stotesbury’s and was there regularly, living in Newport. I remember the ‘Plaice’ in Lake,it was a good chippie.
I totally agree with your last paragraph. I guess things are going down the drain now. Must be”old frying oil”
