The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that they have launched an investigation after a Reynolds & Read worker was crushed in an incident at Duxmore Quarry earlier this month.
As previously reported by Island Echo, on the morning of 11th January flying medics from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) were scrambled from to Duxmore Quarry, off The Downs, following reports that a male had sustained a traumatic injury.
After an hour or so on the ground, the air ambulance lifted off and flew 1 person directly to Southampton General Hospital for specialist treatment.
Island Echo now understands that the male involved – a Reynolds & Read Ltd worker – suffered a potentially life-changing leg injury.
The injured worker has undergone a 13-hour surgery and now begins what is anticipated to be a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
The HSE has confirmed that they have already visited the Duxmore site as work to piece together the events of that morning begin.
A HSE spokesperson has said:
“We have commenced an investigation into this incident at Duxmore Quarry and have visited the site as part of our enquiries.”
Island Echo has approached Reynolds & Read Ltd for comment, but at the time of publication no response has been received.
From what I have seen over the years on the island
many scaffolders do not wear safety helmets etc.
just look at the old Wight City complex
(Breakwater Way)
Too many shortcuts take place on the island.
