After the success of the Sandown Hat Revival in 2023, Sandown Carnival is offering everyone the chance to be part of a hat-making extravaganza for the town’s Regatta this Summer. The Regatta Hat Factory will open its doors on Sandown High Street from Wednesday 17th July, with budding hat makers able to drop in for free, creative inspiration over a whole 4 weeks leading up to Regatta Day in August. Island and mainland artists have come on board as part of the hat-making fun, with a brief to create spectacular headwear for the Grand Regatta Hat Parade on Sunday 11th August. Sandown Carnival Chair, Paul Couestant, has said:
“We were delighted to bring back the tradition of hat-wearing at Sandown Bay Regatta last year. Our hat making workshops, supported by Arts Council England, were incredibly popular and often oversubscribed. “It was clear the community wanted more, so we’re really stepping up what we can offer the town’s residents and visitors this year.”
Sandown Carnival is working in partnership with Boojum & Snark to set up the Hat Factory, and the project manager is Tracy Mikich.
Tracy explains:
“Last year, we saw some amazing giant hats inspired by legendary hat wearer Gertrude Shilling, the Mascot of Ascot. This year, we’re turning the spotlight on Sandown “We’ve invited creative practitioners to capture the essence of Sandown’s heritage, culture, and unique nature and come up with a new collection of big, eye-catching headwear. The results will be shown off at the summer carnival parades as well as the Regatta, and they’ll feature in an exhibition at the Quay Arts Centre later this year.”
The Regatta Hat Factory at 105 High Street, Sandown PO36 8AF will be open from Wednesday 17th July, Wednesdays to Sundays, 12:00 to 20:00, through to the weekend of Sandown Bay Regatta on 10th and 11th August. Groups can apply to book a session by contacting [email protected].

Can l get a made to measure Panama hat please?
Medical episode or overtaking on a bend? Incoming rage from all the wishful thinking dimlows, cant rage at my comments because I have a special mental disease that makes me unlikeable.
That’s blatantly obvious.
Totally agree
My father had a heart attack at the wheel of a car I was with him I suffered two broken femurs 2 broken arms a fractured jaw and skull. Before my dad was even cold the rumour mill’s start
I hope everyone survives without life changing injuries despite the reason this happened
People are so judgemental on the island no one knows the facts so check them before you comment
Or maybe keep your thoughts to yourself so you aren’t so much an insufferable unlikable person. Medical episodes happen, and some people aren’t quite so reckless when travelling with children. But I guess I am a wishful thinking “dimlow” and I most certainly can rage at your comments you are making with absolutely no substance behind them.
No clearly another non isle of wight driver blue car is in the right and black car has entered its blue car side of road. I am a recovery agent and seen this 100x over
Let me guess it’s a elderly driver as always who should not be behind a wheel
Looks rather obvious, but best left to the professionals.
How very sad for all involved .
Praying all have a speedy recovery.
Maybe time for cameras on certain roads on the island .

Before clicking the red arrow
IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU
it makes me sick that an Head on Crash happens,
it can only happen by another vehicle being on the
Wrong side of the road
THIS SHOULD NOT BE
stick to your own side of the road, don’t tell me more
Speeding, why can’t people wait!
It now puts a strain on the Emergency Services, overwhelms the NHS
and causes UNNECESSARY Road delays for other motorists.
It’s about time the authorities placed
Islandwide speed Camera’s / ANPR and CCTV
Someone is too blame for this accident
I pray everyone is ok
Slow down F.F.S, think before overtaking
Yet another on middle road and the council are spending 2 million reducing the limit on the main Newport Sandown road ?!?
I cannot see why , with the inexpensive hi tech digital cameras , easily available to the public, why even better quality cameras, hidden, portable, or even fixed types can’t be fitted to most roads now and data automatically collected by AI
No need for a huge yellow box with FILM inside, like a relic from a Museum , with warnings plastered everywhere.
Whilst speed may not have been the issue here, it is in many accidents
The law needs change to allow hidden hi tech to be trusted rather than one Police van obvious to most and drivers flashing oncoming speeding cars who are oblivious.
That or build bigger hospitals and graveyards
