Tapnell Farm, the Island’s first football golf course, opened this week, just in time for England’s final group game in the European Championships. For those of you who have never played, football golf follows the same rules as traditional golf. However, instead of using a club, players take turns kicking a ball into the hole with the fewest kicks possible. Tapnell’s course features two nine-hole options: a short course with various exciting challenges and a nine-hole long course that will put your endurance to the test. Players can play the full 18 holes by combining the two. So if you can play either sport, your odds to win this golf /football hybrid are even greater.
The course is situated on a hill, providing beautiful views of the countryside and the ocean for you to take in while you play. Tapnell is also home to the Island’s only outdoor aqua park/farm park attraction, as well as the Island’s only football golf course. Archery, axe throwing, and clay pigeon shooting are among the activities available. Visitors are invited to reserve activity sessions online in advance, as well as any meals at the onsite Cow Restaurant.
Footgolf’s precise origins are unknown because it can be traced back to multiple countries simultaneously. Some claim that the game was invented by Juan Manuel Aensi, a Barcelona player, in 2008. In Holland in 2008, the first-ever footgolf competition was held on a golf course. Professional footballers from Belgium and Holland competed in the competition, which was organised by Bas Korsten and Michael Jansen.
Willem Korsten, a Dutch footballer who had played for Tottenham Hotspur, had given Jansen the concept for the game. During his time at the club, he informed Jansen that the players would finish training sessions by kicking a football into the locker room straight off the pitch. Footgolf’s popularity arose when golf was losing its battle to attract new players from the younger generation, regardless of when or where it was developed. According to some, many troubled golf facilities have been saved from irreversible closure as a result of this new game. In addition, it is believed that the game’s simplicity and fun nature have enticed more individuals to try the sport, resulting in increased revenue for golf courses.
FootGolf’s primary goal is identical to golf’s: get the ball (in this instance, a regular #5 size soccer ball) from the teeing ground to the hole (21 inches in diameter) in the lowest number of kicks possible.
Basic Rules
- To tee off, place your ball up to two yards behind the tee markers in the appropriate teeing area. Make sure your kick won’t cause any problems for other golfers or players.
- The ball must be played in one fluid motion. For example, you may not use the top or bottom of your foot to push the ball.
- Wait until the ball has completely come to rest before playing your next shot. Stopping the ball from rolling due to the wind is illegal.
- Play the ball as it lies. You are not permitted to move the ball or remove any things that have become stuck. Exception: If the ball may hinder another player’s kick or ball in any manner, you may mark the spot and raise the ball.
- Do not kick a golf ball off the greens. If your ball comes to a halt on a golf green, kick it to the next available space off the green. There is no penalty.
- If the ball lands in a water hazard, retrieve or replace it within two steps of the nearest land point from where it entered the hazard (as defined by red stakes). A one-stroke penalty will be applied. You can also place the ball where the preceding kick was made and earn a one-stroke penalty.
White stakes mark the boundary of Out of Bounds. If your ball goes OB (out of bounds), position it within two steps of where it crossed between the white stakes, and you’ll be penalised one stroke.
Most courses offer a casual dress code with a no-football-boots restriction. Still, some require you to follow standard golf dress code etiquette, such as polo shirts, fitted shorts or trousers, and so on. Trainers for astroturf or regular sports are commonly accepted. You may even go for traditional golf fancy dress (as seen in the photo below) and show everyone how it’s done.
What’s the use of doing something if it’s not enjoyable!? We all have hectic lives with work and family obligations, so it’s necessary to break up the monotony. Footgolf is the perfect way to inject some fun into your life because it is a sport that allows you to spend time in nature, laugh, and challenge friends and family to a game that people of all ages and abilities can play. Footgolf is not a physically demanding sport, and unlike running, it does not put a strain on your joints. Footgolf may be played by anyone at any age as long as they can kick a ball and know how to have a good time!
