A fundraiser has been launched to support a 21-year-old Islander, who remains in hospital with serious injuries following a collision between a moped and a car last month.
Lewis, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital on 21st April after sustaining multiple fractures to his pelvis and legs, as well as extensive nerve damage. He is expected to undergo several operations and will require a long period of rehabilitation.
His family are currently staying in parent accommodation near the hospital while he receives treatment. A GoFundMe campaign has been created by his cousin to help cover the cost of their stay and to support the additional care Lewis will need going forward.
As previously reported by Island Echo, The incident occurred at around 14:30 near the junction of Hale Common and Watery Lane, between Amazon World and Jubilee Garden Centre. It involved a Honda scooter and a Vauxhall Astra.
Police, paramedics and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were all called to the scene. Due to the seriousness of Lewis’s injuries, he was airlifted directly from the roadside to Southampton General Hospital.
The main Newport to Sandown road was closed in both directions for several hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.
At the time of Lewis’ crash he was 3 weeks into a new seasonal job at a local garden centre.
Speaking on the GoFundMe page, Lewis’ mum Jane has said:
“Thank you so very much for your support in raising funds. Lewis has a long road ahead but knows we are all behind him helping him every step. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”

Sorry.
I assume poor Lewis was on the Moped – it is not mentioned in the article.
Have any charges been made towards the car driver?
Who says it was the car driver at fault? Looks as though the moped went into the back of the car……
Who’s fault was it? If it was his, then every sympathy for him, but what about the car driver? Everybody jumps on a ‘go fund me’ now… I appreciate he’s still in hospital, but people are assuming it’s the car’s fault.
As sad as it may be, insurance should cover
any costs required.
Too many people think Gofundme is the answer
we are all in tough economic times.
