A former launderette in Wootton is set for a new slice of life as a bakery come pizzeria, meaning the smell of clean clothes will be swapped for wafts of fresh bread.
Plans have been unveiled to transform the washing facility on Wootton High Street, next to Mediterranean restaurant Cibo, into a bakery and pizza restaurant.
The application has been made to the Isle of Wight Council by Paula White, to bring the empty commercial building back into use.
In documents submitted in favour of the application, planning agent Andrew White said no other food products but bread and pizza would be cooked on the premises.
Internally, the current plant room would be converted into a kitchen with preparation and washing-up areas and an electric oven. The former launderette area could be laid out as a restaurant, with seats for 20 customers, but also a sales area for bread.
The front of the building would undergo a makeover but marry up with the existing Cibo frontage — with matching timber framing and vertical timber board cladding.
The agent said the proposal would complement the existing range of services available in the village and add to the vitality and vibrancy in Wootton.
It is thought the bakery and pizza restaurant would create 4 jobs.
You can view the application, 22/01378/FUL, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 12th September.

It take more than a few bits of vertical wood and selling bread as the whole building looks an eyesore and fully out of character with anything rise anywhere
At least they are trying….wot u doing ?
Yes I can see your concern because that part of Wooton is packed full of charming lovely buildings isn’t it? The Tescos for example is a particular high point.
I expect my Tesco £1.98 filled crust Pizza will if left in the fridge have a longer expiry date than running such a business there.
Hope I am wrong, but with a pub, waterside, and chippy with Tesco across an albeit continuous stream of noisy traffic to find food, can’t see it being more than a flash in the pan.
Excellent news for Wootton
Good luck to the lady. I’ll look forward to trying both pizza and bread. Independents are great for the market, as long as they’re priced right.
Look forward to trying as an alternative to the chains.
With a deep recession coming, people saying they can’t afford to heat and eat, then why would anyone who lives here pay five times the price of something they can buy over the road at Tesco?
Most have grill combi microwaves which cook such quicker than waiting anyway.
For sale sign up, and planning change of use application for flats come the end of the fall.
The first week of anything new always gains a few curious beings, but rarely ever come back again on a regular basis.
Ryde Monkey
Chains do contain more Iron, but play havoc with ones dentures.
Joshing aside, likely too expensive for the masses but as those on tax credits and universal credit are getting extra, then as many are too lazy to cook for their growing brood despite having all the time in the world compared with full time workers, it may just do well.
It is quite tiring opening the box, learning to read the cooking instructions and lifting it under the grill for ten minutes so who can blame them?
Grill? You can’t even cook a frozen pizza correctly
Combi microwave and grill dear chap at ours.
Yes chains can be a bit hard to chew.
Likely boarded up by Christmas.
Let’s hope it fairs better with the health inspectors than many other Island food outlets have.
Even on a tight budget John Giddings at the IW festy still achieves more stars than most foody places here on the Isle.
Wrong place for it to last imo. May get a few whilst waiting at the vets for the dogs anal glands to be emptied I guess.
Good luck anyway
Would look more appealing without the stable being tacked on the front of the building. Few horse riders dare use the High street now for fear of being bucked off.
Oh my the smell of fresh bread and pizza such a pulling smell. Just hope the building is big enough to meet the demand. Hope they retain the parking at rear of shop, parking is sometimes a problem and the fact it is free will be a bonus.
Good luck better than Tesco having the business
