A software issue causing the suspension of the Floating Bridge remains unresolved with no date given for a return to service.
As first reported by Island Echo, the service was suspended on Sunday evening (16th July) with the Isle of Wight Council saying that today (Wednesday) was the earliest that it could reopen.
Now that target has been missed and no new date has been set for the issue to be fixed.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight council said:
“Despite our best efforts, engineers have been unable to resolve the ongoing software issue which manages the onboard technical systems. Although the computer software issue does not prevent the floating bridge from crossing the river, it is a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) safety requirement that the system must be operable for us to carry members of the public aboard the vessel.”
“Whilst we are committed to getting the floating bridge back into operational service as quickly as possible, we must put passenger safety first. The launch service (Jenny Lee) will continue to operate until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we will provide a further update as soon as possible.”

I heard that the problem was the computer system that runs Windows 95 and has suddenly suffered from a delayed Millenium bug….It’s true…
i thought it was 3.11..try ctrl alt delete.
That’s an easy fix, just set the clock to 1990 and it’ll be good for another 10 years……oh hang on…..that won’t work because Win 95 wasn’t invented until 5 years after that date……better just scrap it.
Have you tried turning it off then on?
or even giving it the three finger solute (ctrl ALT Del)
Then press any key ?
Couldn’t find the “any” key, do you know where it is please?
How can it be a software problem ? Presumably the floating bridge has had the same software for sometime, unless there has been an upgrade. As far as i know software don’t break, unless someone has been messing with it. It can usually be resolved quite quickly via the software developer via computer link. Makes you wonder if its the truth.
unfortunately,.. the compulsory (on Win10+) windows updates often break existing software that has worked fine for years,…
The developers then have to spend time & money developing a fix, for something that wasn’t broken before,…
So if there’s MD Windows involved somewhere,.. it probably is real
(stick to Linux 🙂 )
Its only the software for ticket sale ….the council wont run it for free …ohh nooo
No it’s not. Don’t spread lies.
Cut some holes in it just above the waterline and put some long oars out and have a bloke (or blokess) banging on a big drum.
Or, tow it out to the Solent and cut some holes just BELOW the waterline
What a joke, what is actually being said is that they can’t collect the fares!! Go back to cash payments
What’s all this nonsense about the marine agency!
Give your long suffering customers a free ride whist you sort out this mess.
No that’s not being said. It’s nothing to do with collecting fares.
Hang on a mo, they can still collect the fares for the Jenny Boat…..
Still out of service, what’s new?
One of the worst thing the Isle of Wight council cave invested in the floating bridge wast of tax payer’s money and the new isle of wight trains both always seam to vave problems
Well this FB is not going to be scrapped through wear and tear. What are the cost implications so far for this year, seems to be out of service more than in.
It was actually running then?
