Firefighters were called to a fire involving garden waste, trees and bushes in Calbourne late last night (Thursday).
It was just gone 23:00 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised an appliance from Newport to land behind The Sun Inn on Sun Hill.
Main jets and hose reels were used to extinguish the fire and to stop it from spreading to nearby hedges and trees.
Extra water supplies had to be drafted in with a water carrier – now stationed at Sandown – requested at the scene.
The bonfire was expected to continue to steam overnight, with firefighters leaving the scene at around 01:30.
Crews returned to Calbourne this morning to dampen down the area.
Oh god don’t give that “phoenixing” Smokin’ Jacks in Wroxall any ideas.

Any household lighting fires should be fined!
Pay for a garden waste bin.
I hope someone is getting a bill for the fire brigade attending.
So they should, the same should apply to numpties who
drink / drug drive or speeding motorists who cause unnecessary accidents or injuries.
They should foot the bill.
