Fears a rider had sustained serious injuries following a fall led to a halt in proceedings at the Isle of Wight Scurry and Grand National today (Sunday).
The annual 1-day event got underway at midday with the Chequers Inn ‘Puffing Billy’ Stakes race as the sun shone brightly – a stark contrast to last year’s event which got cancelled due to torrential rain.
The 2 divisions of the Puffing Billy took place with little drama, although Isabelle Lester took a small tumble in the second division. The race was soon followed by the Charles Stanley & Co ‘Puffed Out Billy’ Stakes race which was won by Alan Stay.
It was during the Leslie’s Motors Ashey Scurry Open race that Steph Davies fell on an up-hill section, prompting a response by on-site medical teams and later the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. She was taken to St Mary’s Hospital but is not thought to have sustained any serious injuries. The race was won by Karen Begley.
The event continued, albeit behind schedule, with the Landscape Therapy Junior Division race won by Soppy Carter on Clive.
The Biles & Co Isle of Wight Grand National crown went to Pandora Bailey on Offshore Account.
Crowds lined the West Ashey Farm course in support of the runners and riders, with a great day out had by all.
