Emergency services are tending to an injured man who has fallen from a mobility scooter in Newport’s Holyrood Street this afternoon (Friday).
Several police units are on the scene outside Hursts hardware store where the elderly casualty is laid in the road.
Officers have closed the road from the junction with Crocker Street as they await the arrival of an ambulance.
Members of the public are assisting Police in providing primary care for the man, who has been covered with blankets to keep him warm.
UPDATE SATURDAY – After spending almost 3 hours laid on the ground, the elderly male was finally conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at around 19:20.

Oh bless her. Hope she’s ok. How frightening for her.
I hope the lady is ok and recovering well? but there is a huge question over this case, this incident was reported at 5.20pm on island echo and yet at 7 pm i witnessed this lady still laying in the road waiting for a paramedic to help her! Totally shameful! This lady as i understand it at the very least had head injuries, all this less than 1 mile from the hospital!!
That question is for our local MP and the Tory Government John. Cutbacks and staff shortages have led to the mess the NHS is in now. Never mind, when they push through privatisation of most NHS services, only those that can pay or have insurance will receive treatment anyway. Welcome to America!
What lady? The report said a male casualty … ??
says he not she???
Very worrying that the injured person had to endure a wait of 3 hours laying in the road for emergency help.
Perhaps if the emergency call had been logged as a short circuited toaster then 3 fire crews along with a first responder would have been on the scene in minutes.
An absolute disgrace, now we sit back and wait for the usual pathetic excuse from the ambulance service and yet morning, noon and also at night we endure seeing and hearing ambulances racing around on blues and twos, just so they can attempt to make their scene attendance times. Glad it wasn’t a relative of mine having to lay there, probably frightened and in pain !
That’s very unfair. Life threatening emergencies are always going to be prioritised, perhaps there were several heart attacks already awaiting an ambulance.
So, would you rather an ambulance that was heading to a life threatening incident be diverted to someone who fell two and half feet off a mobility scooter and was alive and in no life threatening condition – no you wouldn’t.
there are not enough ambluances for one to be on standby for everyone, so there will always be situations where a long wait will be required for a non life threatening incident.
Poor person having to wait that long for help hope there ok
Three hours laid out on the ground in Newport! This is disgusting, WHY?
The roads around Newport are lacking in drop crossings, particularly around the approach roads, Prison roads and Newport industrial estates. This is not the first time a wheelchair rider has been injured. The roads concerned were reported to both the prison estates office and Island Roads, but nothing has been done.
